A residential atmosphere and convenient amenities

Abingdon is part of Harford County and is made up of several pockets of subdivisions that line Abingdon Road. “Abingdon is a highly residential area. In the whole area there’s probably 8,000 townhomes, several condo communities and probably another 10,000 single family residences,” says Daniel McGhee, an award-winning Realtor with Homeowners Real Estate. Nearby Emmorton Road is Abingdon’s major shopping hub which has both national chains and local hotspots like Box Hill Pizzeria. Several parks with sports fields and playgrounds, like Cedar Lane Regional Park, create spaces for little league teams and after-work tournaments. Nature centers, walking and biking trails, and access to Otter Creek estuaries let residents spend time in nature. Abingdon benefits from a suburban atmosphere and proximity to Interstate 95, which takes commuters to nearby Baltimore and all the way down to Washington, D.C.

A variety of townhouses and New England homes

Comprised of several neighborhoods branching off Abingdon Road and Philadelphia Boulevard, the area's housing includes single-family homes and townhouses. Communities like Autumn Run and Harford Town offer several different floor plan options and amenities. These can include Colonial or new traditional aesthetics, back decks, garages or patios for grilling or sitting outside. Units often cost between $250,000 and $400,000. Single-family homes were commonly built between the 1950s and early 2000s, so the sizes and styles can vary. Most homes built before the 1990s are ranch-style residences, along with a few Colonial-inspired split-levels and modest Cape Cods. Prices for these older homes often range from $250,000 to $500,000. Newer homes built after 1990 can come in new traditional styles, with columned front porches or large two-car garages. There are also some Colonial and contemporary styles with a mix of brick and vinyl siding. Many have large yards and the occasional private pool. These homes can fetch between $400,000 and $600,000.

Sharing space with Aberdeen Proving Ground

“There’s a major army base nearby called APG, for Aberdeen Proving Ground, so you’ve got a lot of military families and transients, but also people that have lived in this area their whole lives,” McGhee says. “It’s a private facility, but the people who work there buy up a lot of housing, and we get a lot of new people from out of town who either enlist or are hired to work there on-base.” Though some neighbors may be temporary, there are those who come to the area to stay indefinitely.

Shopping and dining on Emmorton Road

Though Abingdon may not have as much nightlife as Bel Air or Baltimore, it still has a few shopping centers that provide nearly everything residents need. Major stores like Walmart, Wegman’s and Giant Food can be found on or near Emmorton Road, in addition to several chain restaurants like Chick-fil-A, Panera Bread and Dunkin’. Locally owned favorites include places like Bacco Italian and Wine Bar, which has a popular happy hour and entrees like eggplant parmesan and a variety of flatbreads. Conrad’s Seafood Restaurant serves fresh fish, clams and cocktails and even has a nautical-themed outdoor playground for kids to play on. The famous Box Hill Pizzeria is known for its crab cakes, which are shipped all over the world.

Commutes to Baltimore and drives up to Bel Air

Abingdon is located next to Interstate 95, making it convenient for those who commute to major cities. However, living so near the highway may result in a lot of traffic noise. Drivers have about a 25-mile trek to downtown Baltimore, and they can reach Washington, D.C., in about two hours by driving 65 miles south on I-95. Drivers can take Emmorton Road north, about 7 miles, to reach Bel Air’s downtown area, which has several shops and restaurants. The nearest hospital is also in Bel Air: The University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. For public transportation options, the Harford Transit LINK on Abingdon Road serves as a park-and-ride service to nearby destinations.
