Suburban Neighborhood in Abington Township, Pennsylvania
Montgomery County 19090
There must be something in the water in Abington because it seems a lot of stars are born in this Philadelphia suburb. Take “A Star is Born” actor Bradley Cooper, for example, and the late Full House actor and comedian Bob Saget. Along with Abington’s Hollywood stars are several sports icons, including Michael Buffer, known for his famous catchphrase “Let’s get ready to rumble!” and Jason Garrett, who locals will have to forgive for head coaching the Dallas Cowboys, a major rival of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Abington residents find themselves in a leafy suburban setting featuring primarily single-family homes from the mid-to-late 1900s. You’ll find a diverse mix of houses right next to each other throughout Abington. You can settle down in a split-level with an attached garage or a colonial-style home with colorful landscaping on a quarter-acre lot for about $400,000 to $500,000. Or you can make yourself at home in a smaller Bungalow or cute picked-fenced ranch-style house in the $300,000 to $400,000 range. Most homes have backyards abutting neighboring yards, while front yards feature sidewalks where you can go for a tranquil stroll through the neighborhood.
Take your stroll to any one of Abington’s parks to enjoy the outdoors. While there are several to choose from, Roslyn Park is a local favorite for people of all ages. Kids can tire out on the big red fish playground and play a variety of sports. Adrenaline junkies can get their fill at the skatepark, while nature lovers explore the woodsy trails and bridges by the creek. You’ll also want to roam the scenic trails at Briar Bush Nature Center. Be sure to check out the nature center’s wildlife, whether immersing yourself in a sea of flutter in the butterfly house, sitting on a rocking chair in the bird observatory or saying hi to Hawkeye, the red-tailed hawk and the many other animal friends.
Local students attend Copper Beech Elementary, Abington Middle and Abington Senior High Schools, which are rated a B+, A- and A by Niche, respectively. Both Saget and Buffer, two of the previously mentioned stars, went to the high school. Niche ranks it as the 47th-best high school in the state, and it’s rated far above the state average regarding college readiness, according to GreatSchools. Students pursuing college can stay right in town by attending Penn State Abington.
Carol Mallen, Realtor with RE/MAX has lived in Abington for about 30 years and credits the community for why she hasn’t left. She says, “People here get to know each other. It’s a community where you can get involved and we have many neighborhood activities.” Mallen, who started the Glenside Gardens Civic Association, helps to put on community events, such as Luminaries, where they hand out more than a thousand candles to residents to display outside.
Old York Road is the town’s main thoroughfare, where you can find just about everything you need, including Jefferson Abington Hospital, one of the largest employers in Montgomery County. There are also many shopping centers with big box stores like Target and Michaels, along with regional chains like MOM’s Organic Market. They’re blended in with a variety of restaurants to choose from. Stop by First Watch for a healthy, farm-fresh brunch or dine at District Tacos and be sure to get a side of chips and queso with your tacos.
You’ll find several SEPTA bus stops along Old York Road for convenient public transportation. There are also two train stations along SEPTA’s Warminster Line, which can take you to Center City, about 16 miles south.
