Lowell Township is a growing Grand Rapids suburb
Lowell Township is a growing suburb just 20 minutes outside Grand Rapids. Township residents enjoy the small-town community and highly rated schools in Lowell but pay lower tax rates outside the city limits. One-third of the land is used for an active farming industry, and the area is quiet, with a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
However, Lowell's landscape is changing as the area increases in popularity. Modern subdivisions are growing, utility services are expanding into the farmland and a new business park is being built. “The Chamber of Commerce used to have the slogan, 'Lowell, The Next Place to Be,'” says Township Supervisor Jerry Hale. “But that got outdated as the Grand Rapids urban area expanded. Now we are the place to be.”
Choose between suburban living and quiet farmland
North of the Grand River, there are closely spaced, suburban-style communities where most properties were built after 1990. These new traditional homes and condos range in price from $350,000 to $600,000, depending on size. The most affordable option is Key Heights Village, a mobile home community where a property recently sold for $65,000. These neighborhoods are close enough to Lowell that many are served by municipal water and sewer systems. Homes directly along both banks of the Grand River have a slight risk of flooding, with recent floods in 2013 and 2018 reaching some residential basements. The south side of the river is far more agricultural, with properties typically having acres of land between them. Older homes start as low as $175,000, and prices get up to $600,000 for freshly renovated private estates. Existing properties use well water and private septic systems. As the city extends sewer and water systems to support a new business park along Interstate 96, more growth will likely follow. “We plan to add residential development that can also use those city services,” Hale says. “That will allow for denser construction on the township’s south side.”
Undefeated wrestling champions at Lowell High School
Kids can attend Alto Elementary School, which gets an A grade from Niche. Then it’s on to Lowell Middle and Lowell High School, both rated A-minus. The high school is known for its sports teams, with the boy’s wrestling team that has won consecutive state titles from 2014 to 2025. The school district also partners with the regional education agency Kent ISD to offer career-focused programs and college credit courses.
The riverside park is a center point for outdoor activity
Outdoor activity is often centered on the Grand River Riverfront Park, the site of Lowell Township’s iconic bridge. The Lowell Timber Footbridge was built in 2019 and spans the length of the river, making it one of the largest timber-framed bridges in the country. The park is on both river banks and has eight soccer fields, eight sandy volleyball courts, a canoe launch and a softball field. The new pickleball courts are complemented by a seasonal ice cream stand. In 2024, the township held its first BridgeFest at the park, drawing in the community with competitions, live music and food trucks. “During BridgeFest, the nearby church bought out the ice cream stand for the whole day, so anyone could just walk up and order for free,” Hale says. “That’s the kind of community involvement we have. That kind of thing is why people want to move here.”
Head into Lowell for shopping and dining
Residents can head into Lowell for a quaint Main Street shopping district and a Meijer grocery store. For a small city, there’s a wide variety of restaurants, including homey brewpubs, bars, Mexican food and Asian fusion cuisine. In the summer, downtown comes to life with farmers markets and riverside activity. A public library and large movie theater round out Lowell’s growing selection.
County fairs and farm stands in rural West Michigan
On the rural south side of Lowell Township, horse stables are interspersed with family farms. Heidi’s Farmstand and Bakery is a local favorite known for its freshly made doughnuts and pastries. In the fall, Heidi’s has pumpkin patches and a challenging corn maze, and visitors can pick out Christmas trees in the winter. Lowell Township is also home to the Kent County Youth Fairground, where the annual week-long fair includes a carnival, tractor pulls and animal shows from the local 4-H club. In addition, the North Country Trail, which passes through eight states, has a section running through Lowell Township's farmland and into the city.
Twenty minutes to downtown Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids is around 20 miles away from Lowell Township. The trip is usually a quick 20 minutes via State Route 21 or Interstate 96. However, as Lowell Township grows in popularity, so does the traffic flow. “It’s a real bottleneck to get through the city of Lowell, and Interstate 96 can get jam-packed during rush hour,” Hale says. “Our goal is to alleviate that traffic in the coming years.” Grand Rapids is a major metropolitan hub with several hospitals, large shopping centers and major employers. The city’s Gerald R. Ford International Airport is just over 10 miles away.
