Situated 91 miles northwest of Phoenix, amid cantaloupe fields and saguaro cacti, Aguila is a small community of farmers and cowboys with only one restaurant, a gas station and a library. “I think Aguila’s going to be the next frontier because the prices are fantastic,” says Melanie Lakovich, a Realtor with Homesmart who’s sold homes here for 5 years. The flat land here is desirable for keeping horses, and many of the larger properties are already outfitted with stables. Wickenburg, a nearby town known for its rodeo culture, is 26 miles east. Within the neighborhood, Aguila Community Park has green space, lighted basketball courts and swing sets. The surrounding Sonoran Desert lends Aguila a feeling of open space, and much of it is open for off-roading and horseback riding. To the southwest, in the nearly 23,000-acre Harquahala Mountains Wilderness, hikers can trek to the top of Harquahala Mountain, the tallest peak in southwest Arizona. To the south, the Eagle Eye Launch Site is used each month by TRAPHX, a group of amateur rocketeers who meet monthly to launch high-powered rockets.

Coyote’s Den Restaurant, Aguila’s only sit-down restaurant, offers both Mexican and American comfort food, including all-day breakfast. Locals can also head to Miss Robins to pick up a sandwich or pizza; the deli is located in a general store that also sells fresh produce, local beef and animal feed. Other grocery stores include Family Dollar and Westerner Groceries. Wickenburg, located about 26 miles east, has more options, including hearty steak dinners at Charley’s Steak House and grocery shopping at Safeway.

The Theater Ninja Club at Wickenburg High
Local kids can start school at Aguila Elementary, which serves kids in kindergarten through Grade 8 and earns a B-minus from Niche. While Aguila Elementary is centrally located within the community, high schoolers have to travel about 25 miles to the C-rated Wickenburg High. Here, they can get involved in performing arts by taking classes or joining the Theater Ninja Club, which teaches kids about the technical side of theater performances. There are two annual productions held at the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts, located on Wickenburg High’s campus.
Along Highway 60
Highway 60 passes through the community’s center, leading roughly 26 miles east to Wickenburg; downtown Phoenix is a 91-mile trip. State Route 71 is about a mile east and leads northeast toward Prescott. With no public transportation, bike lanes or sidewalks, residents rely on their cars to get around. Wickenburg Community Hospital is 27 miles east. There are two private runways just south of the community, and Wickenburg Municipal Airport, a general aviation airport with no commercial flights, is 22 miles away; Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a 95-mile trip.
BubbleManiacs at the Aguila Library
The Aguila Library hosts regular programs in the community, including the popular BubbleManiacs each summer, a foam and bubble party for kids. Locals can also travel to Wickenburg for the annual Gold Rush Days Senior Pro Rodeo, a three-day celebration of the city’s founding; festivalgoers can enjoy a parade, carnival and rodeo featuring bull riding, roping and barrel racing.
In a Special Flood Hazard Area
“The whole area is covered in different flood zones,” Lakovich says. “Do your research and make sure you understand the flood zone before purchasing land here.” Much of Aguila is in a Special Flood Hazard Area, FEMA’s highest designation for flooding risk. While flooding here hasn’t occurred recently, homeowners may be required to purchase flood insurance and get special permits for building projects.
Aguila also has a moderate risk for wildfire, but residents are more likely to experience smoke from nearby fires than any direct effects. The Aguila Volunteer Fire Department is in the community’s center, and residents can download the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management’s app to stay informed.
