The Sherbondy Hill neighborhood is a vibrant pocket of Akron offering budget-friendly housing, top-tier parks and proximity to many of the city’s biggest attractions. Formerly known as Lane Wooster, this neighborhood is adjacent to Downtown Akron and borders Kenmore, West Akron and Highland Square.

The neighborhood has been home to some famous residents, including NBA superstar LeBron James, who lived here during his childhood and high school years. The neighborhood was also home to abolitionist John Brown.

Sherbondy Hill was renamed in 2017 to respect its status as a historically Black neighborhood and its ties to Akron’s Jewish community. Rich with culture and local history, the Sherbondy Hill community is reclaiming its roots in the city of Akron as a wonderful place to live, work and play.

Sherbondy Hill offers relatively affordable real estate, with spacious homes typically selling below the city average. Nearly half of all homes in the neighborhood were built before 1940, making this a popular place for those looking for well-priced homes with historical charm and character. The streets are lined with cozy brick Tudors, Colonials, foursquares, bungalows and ranches. Apartment buildings and rental homes can also be found throughout the neighborhood.

The neighborhood is less than 2 miles away from Downtown Akron, which affords residents easy access to bars, restaurants, theaters and the city’s minor league baseball stadium at Canal Park.

A neighborhood staple in Sherbondy Hill is Bob's Hamburg, a no-frills eatery serving breakfast and burgers since 1931. The shopping hubs along Hawkins Avenue and Vernon Odom Boulevard are where you'll find more restaurants, grocery stores and other local shops.

Sherbondy Hill is also home to the Akron Zoo, one of the city’s most popular and kid-friendly attractions featuring over 700 species, train rides, community days and fun seasonal events. The Lehner Family Zoo Gardens are right next door, with an owl habitat and thousands of native plants.

For a taste of Akron's local history, the Simon Perkins Stone Mansion and the John Brown House are diagonal from each other on Copley Road in Sherbondy Hill.

This Akron neighborhood is central to the city, but it also hosts many events and local goings-on right outside your door.

The Odom Boulevard Branch Library is a beautiful community resource offering regular story times for kids, cooking classes, book discussions and “Paws for Reading,” an event where children read to the library’s furriest friends. Also nearby is the None Too Fragile Theatre, a popular performing arts venue on Exchange Street with a slate of annual shows and drama workshops.

On West Market Street is House Three Thirty, a multiuse community center created by the Lebron James Family Foundation. With a mission to provide services and resources to students and families in the Akron area, House Three Thirty hosts community events and outreach initiatives in and around Sherbondy Hill.

Residents of the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood will find no shortage of public parks and sports facilities nearby, including Lane Field Park and Perkins Park. The parks feature tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, playgrounds, picnic shelters and a full-sized track. Perkins Park features the Perkins Woods Pool, the main community swimming facility for the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood.

The neighborhood is also home to the Ed Davis Community Center, a facility used for youth basketball, summer camps, senior programs and more. Other public parks include Sherbondy Park and Mannings Pond, where you can fish and spend a relaxing day by the water.
