Northwest Albany suburb that features gated subdivisions
A small suburb in northwest Albany, Westgate features a mix of gated and non-gated subdivisions of single-family homes and condos. They include gated communities like Wyndham Chase, which stands out for its spacious houses set on several acres. Westgate is also close to major retail centers, including Albany Square and Albany Mall, as well as medical offices and Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. The west side campus of Albany State University is also nearby. The neighborhood is zoned for Dougherty County Schools, offering specialized programs like Lake Park Elementary’s Medical Arts Magnet Academy. Downtown Albany is 5 miles away, easily reachable via Dawson Road, where there is more shopping plus waterside recreation on the Flint River.

Westgate is less than 2 miles from several shopping centers and malls. Albany Square has Hobby Lobby, PetSmart and Publix. Albany Mall features department stores like Dillard's and Belk. "Though the mall isn't a shopping hub, the surrounding area is. There are many restaurants and franchises, and Northwest Albany is where things are concentrated," says Tiffany Vicks, Realtor with The Real Estate Concierge and long-time resident who has been selling houses for over six years. Dining options include The Canterbury Kitchen at Mayberry Diner, a breakfast and lunch spot that feels like grandma's living room with gingham tablecloths and black-and-white photos. Doublegate Country Club is a few miles away
Doublegate Country Club is a private, members-only club 3 miles from Westgate that offers adult and junior tees and 12 dog-leg holes. The club also offers a Junior Golf Program led by a PGA Head Golf Professional. River Pointe Golf Course is a public option for golfers 6 miles west. Just north of the neighborhood is Hawthorne Park, a small green space shaded by tall, slender trees with a swing set, basketball court and picnic tables. Downtown Albany is less than 6 miles east and is home to the Flint River, a popular area for kayaking and fishing.

Wyndham Chase offers acres of land
Homes rarely hit the market in Westgate. However, large 4-acre lots are for sale at around $25,000 per acre in the gated community of Wyndham Chase, where traditional-style homes generally exceed 6,000 square feet and sit far from the road surrounded by trees. Tuxedo Place is a gated subdivision of brick condo buildings with two- to three-bedroom units. Bradford Court is also gated and offers New Traditional brick houses with two-car garages. Prices can range from $200,000 to over $800,000. There are also houses that are not in gated communities, such as those along Meadowbrook Lane and Hawthorne Drive. Some parts of the neighborhood are prone to flooding during storms.
Cape cod and other home styles can be found in Westgate.

Lake Park Elementary is home to the Medical Arts Magnet Program
The neighborhood is served by the Dougherty County School System. Lake Park Elementary School has a B grade on Niche and offers gifted programs and a Medical Arts Magnet Academy. This competitive program offers hands-on learning opportunities with registered doctors and nurses, allowing students to earn high school and college credits. The program continues at Merry Acres Middle School, which has a C grade on Niche. Westover Comprehensive High School also holds a C grade and has award-winning athletics and STEM programs. Albany State University is a public, four-year historically black college; its main campus is located 6 miles away and its west campus is 2 miles south of Westgate.
Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is close by
U.S. Route 19 and U.S. Route 82 are easily accessible and within 3 miles of the neighborhood. Atlanta is about 180 miles north and Columbus is 80 miles south. The neighborhood is close to clusters of medical offices specializing in cardiology, internal medicine and orthopedics, which serve as major employers in Albany. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is another major employer located 4 miles east. Southwest Georgia Regional Airport is an 8-mile drive south, providing connecting flights to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport via Delta.
