Bel-Air in Northeast Albuquerque is close to shopping and I-40

Bel-Air is a neighborhood in Northeast Albuquerque, about midway between the Rio Grande River on the west and the Sandia Mountain Range on the east and close to retail. Interstate 40 runs on the south side of the neighborhood. "That specific area is just close to a ton of shopping. There's a mall that's right there, and it's not too far from the freeway itself, so you have easy, quick access," says Melven Louis, an associate broker with Albuquerque Realty.

Menaul Boulevard, Green Jeans Food Hall and grocery stores

Bel-Air is split horizontally by Menaul Boulevard Northeast, a major thoroughfare and commercial corridor. Dining options on Menaul include Mac's Steak in the Rough, an old-fashioned drive-in that opened in 1960. To the south, Green Jeans Food Hall is a marketplace created with shipping containers. The food hall includes Santa Fe Brewing Company, which has a taproom, Tesoro Arcade and a handful of eateries. The southeast side of Bel-Air has a Walmart Neighborhood Market, and to the west, across Carlisle Boulevard Northeast, is a Walmart Supercenter. South of I-40 is a Whole Foods Market.

Nearby malls like Coronado Center and ABQ Uptown

There are several popular malls to the east, within a few miles. Coronado Center is the largest mall in the state, with more than 130 businesses. ABQ Uptown has a pedestrian-friendly, open-air setup and close to 50 stores. Winrock Town Center has dozens of stores and restaurants and includes a movie theater, Regal Winrock. Events at ABQ Uptown include a holiday tree lighting, Wine Down Wednesday, a Taste of ABQ and dog fashion shows and parades. The Winrock Artisan Market is held on Saturdays in the spring and summer.

ABQ RIDE buses, interstates and Downtown Albuquerque

Public transportation includes the free bus system ABQ RIDE, which stops along Menaul, San Mateo and Carlisle boulevards. Interstate 40 is south of the neighborhood, but noise isn't much of an issue for the majority of residents since they live north of Menaul. Interstate 25 is a couple of miles to the west. "You could just hop on the freeway to go anywhere you want," Louis says, explaining that nearly all of Albuquerque's prime sites are within a half-hour drive. Downtown Albuquerque, about 5 miles to the southwest, has the Alvarado Transportation Center. Commuters can take Rio Metro's New Mexico Rail Runner Express north to Santa Fe or south to Los Lunas. Amtrak is also available. Albuquerque International Sunport, the region's airport, is about 9 miles from Bel-Air.

Pueblo-style midcentury bungalows north of Menaul Boulevard

Bel-Air has Southwestern architecture, including Pueblo-style homes with stucco exteriors. Many homes date to the 1950s and have been remodeled. Two-bedroom bungalows under 1,200 square feet are common. Some homes have carports, patios or fenced backyards. As of January 2025, 36 homes had been sold over 12 months, and the median price was $240,000. For renters, there are a couple of manufactured home parks south of Menaul.

Bel-Air Elementary, McKinley Middle and Del Norte High

Bel-Air Elementary School and McKinley Middle School both earn C grades from Niche. Del Norte High School receives a B. In addition, the Albuquerque Public Schools system has magnet schools.

Grisham Park, Montgomery Park and community spaces

Some of the closest community parks are Grisham Park, which has playgrounds and workout equipment, and Montgomery Park, which has tennis courts, a trail and a bike path. Montgomery Pool is open seasonally. Close to the pool is the Palo Duro Senior Center, which serves weekday breakfasts and lunch and has a full slate of activities, including billiards, ceramics, a stamp club and line dancing. The center also plans outings, including walking tours and hikes. About a block from the senior center is Erna Fergusson Library, which offers story time, movie afternoons, lectures and classes. Albuquerque has a variety of outdoor amenities within 8 miles of Bel-Air. On the east are hiking trails in the Sandia Foothills, and to the west, there's the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park and the ABQ BioPark. Albuquerque's biggest event, the International Balloon Fiesta, is held in October at Balloon Fiesta Park, north of Bel-Air.
