Grassy lots, green spaces and well-rated schools in Heritage East
Heritage East is an established Albuquerque neighborhood from the 1980s with mature trees and grassy lots—not a common sight in the high desert climate of Duke City. The neighborhood is also surrounded by verdant parks and belongs to a well-rated school district. “It’s zoned for one of the best high schools in the city,” says Patricia Bartolotta, the owner of Re/Max Alliance Realtors. “It’s ranked one of the highest, and the feeder schools are also very good.” A major thoroughfare connects the residential Heritage East to local restaurants, big-name grocery stores and Interstate 25, which leads to downtown Albuquerque.
Homes with Pueblo and Spanish Revival elements and outdoor living spaces
The average home price in Heritage East is almost $150,000 higher than the average across the Albuquerque metro area, and the median household income in the neighborhood is more than double that of the national average. Single-level new traditional homes built throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s often have brick exteriors; single-story Pueblo-style homes with thick stucco walls are common as well, with both styles ranging between $450,000 and $700,000. Properties often have paved and xeriscaped outdoor living spaces, and some homes come with in-ground pools, gazebos and firepits. Multi-level new traditional houses incorporate Pueblo and Spanish Revival design elements, with balconies and decks that overlook grassy lawns. Most fetch between $520,000 and $725,000. The neighborhood scores a crime score of 2 out of 10 on the CAP Index, which is significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Highly rated schools feed into the state’s sixth-best high school
Children may start their early education at Hubert Humphrey Elementary School, followed by Eisenhower Middle School, both of which earn A-minus grades from Niche. La Cueva High School scores an A grade, and Niche names it the sixth-best public high school in New Mexico. The school offers a competitive selection of Advanced Placement classes, as well as a wide variety of electives—from Computer-Aided Design for architecture and computer science programming to musical theater and a Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program. Extracurricular activities and clubs include a beats and production club, a student senate and a philosophy club, among others.
Green parks provide athletic courts and open space in the high desert
The parks around Heritage East add a splash of green to an otherwise sandy, graveled streetscape. “Our parks get used a lot,” Bartolotta says. “They’re very well-kept. They’re green. There’s grass, trees and walking paths.” Rotary Park sits at the heart of the neighborhood, where small children can play in its sand pit or scale its playground, while older kids can shoot hoops on the half-basketball court. Farther southeast, Quintessence Park stretches across more than 5 acres, and its shaded picnic area and expansive grassy field prove a convenient setting for outdoor gatherings. The park also has two tennis courts and two half-basketball courts for those who are more sports-minded. Sunsets at Heritage Hills Park paint the Sandia Mountains in a glowing shade of red, and the Jay Yogeshwar Trail that runs alongside the oblong, 15-acre park leads from the Heritage Hills neighborhood to Quintessence Park.
Restaurants and shopping centers along Paseo Del Norte Boulevard
Paseo Del Norte Boulevard takes drivers west to several local eateries and grocery stores. Jinja Bar & Bistro serves Pan-Asian dishes in an interior decked with vintage-style posters of the South Pacific and paper parasols. Artisan sake, local beers and tiki bowls are on the beverage menu, which includes dedicated sections for mojitos, martinis and pre-prohibition cocktails. A Trader Joe’s and an Albertsons Market sit next to each other nearby.
Farther west along Paseo Del Norte Boulevard, the chefs at Azuma Sushi & Teppan handcraft Japanese specialties in a dark and moody interior at La Cueva Town Center. The plaza also includes Tula’s Kitchen, where diners enjoy artisan sandwiches and pasta in a comfortable interior with plush leather booths and blue mosaic tiles, and Smith’s, a grocery store.
Paseo Del Norte Boulevard and Interstate 25 connect to downtown
Paseo Del Norte Boulevard—also known as New Mexico state Route 423—runs across the northern side of the neighborhood. It traverses most of the city, including the Rio Grande, and connects with Interstate 25. Commuters can take the interstate to downtown Albuquerque, which is about 11 miles from the neighborhood. Academy Road is south of the neighborhood, and it’s home to more shopping centers, anchored by stores like Walmart Supercenter and Whole Foods Market.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
