Pat Hurley is a storied neighborhood near Albuquerque highlights
Pat Hurley's deep roots predate the city of Albuquerque. Initially a part of the Spanish colonial village of Atrisco, established in 1700, the area remained agricultural until the post-World War II population boom created a demand for housing. Today, Pat Hurley has a thriving neighborhood association and a steady base of generational residents. "A lot of people have been there for a long time," says Vincent Rivas, a Realtor with 10 years of experience at Realty One of New Mexico. "[They] watch each other's properties and help each other out." Pat Hurley is located on the west bank of the Rio Grande, which affords locals easy access to the river and its surrounding trails. The area's namesake park, built partially on an elevation, offers a clear view of the water set against the Sandia Mountains. Conveniences are close to home in the neighborhood's small shopping corridor, and it's just a short drive to Old Town and downtown.
Commuting options make trips around the city convenient
Bus stops through ABQ Ride line Central Avenue Southwest, which spans Pat Hurley's southern side. Albuquerque Rapid Transit operates on the southeastern edge at Town of Atrisco Station. New Mexico State Road 45 is just over 2 miles west of the neighborhood's core. The highway flows north to intersect with Interstate 40, which in turn flows east to Interstate 25.
Shopping and dining options in and around Pat Hurley
El Super for groceries, Ross Dress for Less and Family Dollar are on the neighborhood's east side. Pat Hurley also has a few local eateries, including El Charritos New Mexican Restaurant, which has been family-owned for over 35 years. More restaurants settle along main roads, including Golden Pride, an Albuquerque chain. Old Town and downtown are within 3 miles. "Downtown slowed down a lot after [COVID-19]," Rivas says. "[But] you're seeing more businesses open, more bars and restaurants." Old Town, founded in the Spanish colonial period, is known for its eclectic art galleries, museums and shops. "You get a lot of tourists there. It's a neat place because it has one of the oldest churches in the [state]." Back home, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is a place for worship.
Recreation in the community and along the Rio Grande
Pat Hurley Park has an upper and lower loop section. Rivas says the trail to the top is steep and often used for working out. Kids gather at the small play area there, and benches overlook the city. Some people use the scenic backdrop for their wedding and prom photos. The park's lower section — with pickleball courts, tennis courts and a larger playground — circles its community center, which is temporarily closed to construct new fitness and gym spaces. Pat Baca Open Space, just north of the neighborhood, is a gateway to forested trails connecting to the banks of the Rio Grande and ABQ BioPark, home to a zoo, aquarium, botanic garden and Tingley Beach. While not actually a beach, Tingley offers catch-and-release fishing ponds and is next door to the private Albuquerque Country Club, a city feature since 1914. Rio Grande Valley State Park, loved by bird-watchers and hikers, is around 6 miles north.
Pat Hurley’s vintage homes and collection of townhouses
Stucco ranch, cottage and Pueblo Revival styles are common across Pat Hurley — some with forward-facing garages, others with carports. Cacti, evergreens and tall oaks spring from yards covered in pebbles or grass. Different styles of fencing border modest lawns and sidewalks that are narrow to nonexistent. With a median build year of 1956, older homes remain the norm here, and some require a little more renovation, while others are ready to move in. Prices range from about $150,000 to $345,000, depending on size and condition. Pat Hurley also has a few townhouses ranging from around $219,000 to $267,000.
Albuquerque Public Schools promotes bilingual education
Albuquerque Public Schools serves the area. Lavaland Elementary School earns a C-minus from Niche. John Adams Middle School gets a C rating. West Mesa High School earns a C-plus. Students at West Mesa can earn bilingual recognition by accomplishing Spanish language milestones, including taking Advanced Placement courses in Spanish.
Relationship-building and preventative measures to combat crime
Pat Hurley's CAP Index Crime Score is a 5 out of 10, only slightly higher than the national average of 4. However, the neighborhood has contended with gun violence in the last few years. The neighborhood association works to strengthen community bonds as a preventative measure. One of their past initiatives was the nature mandala project, where people came together to create a mandala made from organic materials, such as rocks, fruits and flowers.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
