Silver Hill has prime access to the University of New Mexico
For many, Silver Hill’s sheen comes from its location. This Albuquerque neighborhood is across Central Avenue from the University of New Mexico’s Central Campus. In turn, students fill most of the classic homes around this area. Residents are within walking distance of not just their classes but also an assortment of attractions. “The walkability is fantastic,” says Shane Dolinski, an associate broker with Realty One of New Mexico, who has about 25 years of industry experience. “It’s literally across the street from the University of New Mexico. Lots of restaurants, bars and coffee shops.”
Well-established houses present opportunities for residents and investors
Streets lined with trees guide people around Silver Hill’s collection of homes. Most houses were built from the 1920s through the 1940s, and many are Spanish Colonial, Pueblo and Craftsman style. Properties sell for $200,000 to $500,000 and attract heavy investor interest. Many homes serve as duplexes or triplexes, and more than 90% of residents are renters.
Restaurants and more can be found along Central Avenue
Central Avenue, part of U.S. Route 66, is a major commercial thoroughfare in Albuquerque and serves as Silver Hill’s northern border. Residents can walk to some of the eateries and other attractions on the stretch, like Naruto. “Naruto is a great spot for authentic-style ramen,” Dolinski says. “It’s Japanese-owned.” Yasmine’s Cafe is known for its Mediterranean dishes, as is Gyros down the road. “It’s authentic Greek cuisine,” Dolinski says of Gyros. “The owners are Greek there. So it’s very, very good.” The Copper Lounge is an option for drinks, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar. There’s also a Smith’s grocery store in the area, on Yale Boulevard. The neighborhood’s CAP Index Crime Score is 8 out of 10, significantly higher than the national average of 4. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office began proactive patrols in Albuquerque in 2024, supplementing the Albuquerque Police Department.
Nearby Nob Hill hosts multiple community staples
The Nob Hill neighborhood, located just about a mile east of Silver Hill, is known to host multiple major annual events. July’s Route 66 Summerfest is one of them and features multiple stages of music, vendors, kids activities and more on Central Avenue. Central Avenue glows with the Twinkle Light Parade in early December, an evening holiday celebration full of brightly lit floats and vehicles.
Health care is a big deal at the University of New Mexico
The neighboring University of New Mexico is the largest school in the state, with over 23,000 students on its Albuquerque campus. UNM has a highly rated School of Medicine and a well-regarded nursing program. The 618-bed UNM Hospital is part of the university’s campus. Much of the Central New Mexico Community College’s campus is in Silver Hill, too, and that school has roughly 19,000 full- and part-time students. Younger students in Silver Hill can enter the Albuquerque Public Schools system, which has a B-plus grade on Niche. Students attend the A-minus-rated Monte Vista Elementary or C-minus-rated Lowell Elementary based on where they live, and both offer after-school programs. The neighborhood is zoned for the A-minus-rated Jefferson and C-rated Wilson middle schools. Wilson has a Performing Arts Program with band and orchestra programs, and elective courses at Jefferson include robotics and drama. Albuquerque High carries an A-minus rating and extracurricular groups including mock trial and an esports club.
Roosevelt Park’s disc golf course offers a competitive outlet
The hilly Roosevelt Park takes up a southern pocket of Silver Hill. This 14-acre space has plenty of shade, thanks to a mix of towering elm trees that double as obstacles for disc golfers. “Roosevelt Park is a pretty cool park,” Dolinski says. “It has one of the first 18-hole disc golf courses in the state.” Roosevelt has a playground as well. Milne Stadium borders Roosevelt Park and serves as the site for some Albuquerque Public School football and track and field events.
ABQ RIDE runs all over Silver Hill
The city’s ABQ RIDE bus system has several stops around the Silver Hill area, most on Central Avenue and University Boulevard. The ABQ RIDE network includes more than 20 routes. Lead and Coal avenues in the neighborhood have dedicated bike lanes. Oak Street in the neighborhood is also a quick way to reach Interstate 25 and takes drivers up to Sante Fe, just over 60 miles away. The Albuquerque International Sunport airport is located 2 miles south of Silver Hill.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
