From back-to-school giveaways to day camps for seniors, Sonia Quarters is full of churches and ministries providing programs that aim to help their neighbors. In addition to a dozen houses of worship, the Alexandria neighborhood is home to Alma Redwine Elementary School, so neighborhood kids can walk to school. “It’s an old, established neighborhood. There’s definitely still a good bit of the older generation there,” says Iris Barron, a Realtor with Rhodes Realty, who has been selling houses in the area for two years. “It’s probably one of the least expensive neighborhoods in Alexandria. You can find houses between $15,000 and $40,000.”

Sonia Quarters brims with vintage cottages
Homebuyers will primarily find brick and clapboard cottages built from the 1950s to the ‘70s. Properties rest along narrow sidewalk-lined streets with churches scattered between them. Lots are typically compact with chain-link fences. Prices range from $70,000 to $110,000, but those that need renovation can be found for $15,000 to $40,000. “You’ll see more investors in that area,” Barron says. “They buy them, fix them up and flip them.” Sonia Quarters has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 6 out of 10, with scores of 8 and 9 for violent crime. Dance groups and camps for seniors at Antioch Baptist Church
Antioch Baptist Church on Houston Street offers a gospel music dance group for women and a Senior Day Camp with bingo games and low-impact exercise classes. Sonia Quarters Outreach Ministry on Adams Court holds an annual Back-to-School Giveaway event that provides kids with free clothing and supplies. “The churches play a big role in the neighborhood. Antioch Baptist is the newest and biggest,” Barron says. “There’s also the Martin Community Center that can be rented out for family parties and classes.”
Alexandria Zoological Park, just west of the neighborhood on Masonic Drive, features an annual Holiday Light Safari around Christmastime. The event has illuminated animal displays and thousands of Christmas lights.

Outdoor fun at Bringhurst City Park
Just west of the neighborhood, there’s Bringhurst City Park, the Alexandria Tennis Complex and the Hynson Dog Park. Bringhurst City Park, on Masonic Drive, has a playground, splash pad, paved walking trails and a volleyball court. Across the street, the tennis complex offers eight outdoor courts, and the dog park has fenced-in areas for larger and smaller dogs.
A mile away, residents can catch a movie at The Grand Alexandria on North Mall Drive or go bowling at the Four Seasons Bowling Center on North Boulevard. The bowling alley also has an arcade and offers youth and adult bowling leagues.

The Alexandria International Airport is 7 miles northwest. Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital is a mile away on Masonic Drive, and downtown is a 2-mile drive via Overton Street.
