Major cities only an hour from Alexandria Township

Alexandria Township, New Jersey, offers country living an hour from New York City and Philadelphia. “Primarily, most people come out to Hunterdon County for the proximity to large cities,” says Joseph Tersigni, a Realtor with Weichert Realtors who has sold homes in the area for five years. “There’s relative proximity to the Poconos and the beach. There’s less congestion here than in certain parts of the state.” Many people who live here commute to work. Homebuyers also see their money go further, as large homes on expansive lots go for less than those in New York suburbs. “Lots are larger out here,” says Tersigni. “People want some breathing space.”

Large homes and large lots in a 'highly desirable' area

A bird's-eye view of Alexandria shows swathes of rich greenery with winding roadways and patches of farmland. “Alexandria Township is pretty established,” says Tersigni. “It’s a little bit building prohibitive with legislation like the Highlands Act. You don’t get large tracks of land to turn into residential housing. There’s still an inventory shortage. It’s highly desirable.” The Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act protects drinking water and preserves open spaces. Preserves and recreation areas around the area provide a scenic backdrop. Homes are usually situated along roads ending in cul-de-sacs or branching off major routes. Most are built back from the road with long driveways on manicured lots. Homes are in the Colonial Revival, New Traditional and farmhouse styles, ranging from $635,000 to $960,000. Homes built in the early 2000s on over 2 acres can go for over $1 million. Most homes have three or more bedrooms and sit on at least an acre. Alexandria Township receives a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
