One of the draws of living in the Traube Fox River View neighborhood in Algonquin, about 45 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, is its location on the west side of the Fox River, close to the heart of the village center. “There’s a mix of people who live in Algonquin who work in downtown Chicago, and those who work in the western suburbs,” says Karen Goins, a broker with Re/Max Suburban. “Most of the people have some sort of commute.” When work doesn’t beckon, parks and activities are close in the downtown area, as well as independently owned shops and restaurants.

Homes on large lots close to the Fox River
There’s plenty of space between neighbors in Traube Fox River View, with many homes on lots around a half-acre. Ranch-style, Colonial Revival and 1900s farmhouses are most common. On the east side of Main Street, the houses are built closer together near the Fox River. The First Street Foundation, which tracks environmental hazards, says there is an extreme risk of flooding for homes near the river. The risk decreases west of Main Street. Recent home sales have ranged from $250,000 to $475,000. Comprised entirely of single-family homes, the neighborhood is quiet. The neighborhood scores a 2 on the CAP Crime Index, with all crime categories below the national average of 4.

Downtown and Randall Road developments
What used to be a car-dependent downtown area changed into a pedestrian-friendly environment along Main Street within the last few years, less than a mile north of the neighborhood. The Old Town District has locally owned shops and iconic restaurants, including Port Edward, a seafood restaurant built around a dock alongside the Fox River. “It’s a cool place where you can actually have a meal on a boat,” Goins says. Cattleman’s Burger and Brew is a restaurant and bar specializing in burgers and ribs. The party happens on Tuesday evenings with karaoke and Wednesday evenings with music bingo. A couple of miles west is the growing shopping corridor of Randall Road. Algonquin Commons is an outdoor mall that opened in 2004. Various chain restaurants and supermarkets, including Aldi and Trader Joe's, have opened around it. Riverview Restaurant and Tavern has pizza and sandwiches, while Yin & Yang’s is a Chinese carry-out restaurant within the neighborhood.

Cornish Park on the Fox River
One of the picturesque features of downtown Algonquin is the clock tower at the entrance to Cornish Park, at the corner of Algonquin Road and Harrison Street. The two-and-a-half-acre facility has fishing opportunities on the Fox River, as well as a walking path, a gazebo and a playground. Hill Climb Park is true to its name. A steady incline on Huntington Drive off Main Street leads to the park, which features an observation clearing at the north end that gives a scenic view of the village. At nearly 13 acres, there’s a mid-sized athletic field, a circular walking path, scattered play equipment and a full playground. The 26-mile Prairie Trail runs through a portion of the neighborhood, a converted railroad that's popular among walkers and bikers.

Access to highly-rated Algonquin schools
Kenneth E. Neubert Elementary School is rated an A-minus on Niche. Sixth through eighth graders go to Westfield Community School, which has kindergarten through eighth-grade students. The school is rated a B-plus. Harry D. Jacobs High School is rated an A-minus. The school’s specialized career and technical education classes focus on business, culinary arts, and automotive technology, and they offer an opportunity to receive college credit and work-based internships. The school gets an A-minus grade. All the schools are part of Community Unit School District 300, serving students in Algonquin and surrounding suburbs. Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital is the nearest medical center, a 7-mile drive west on Algonquin Road.
