Historic living close to modern conveniences
The West Park Historic District in Allentown offers a glimpse of the past while being situated just blocks away from modern commercial corridors and the downtown area. The neighborhood, replete with older homes centered around West Park, looks much the same as it did more than a century ago. “What’s nice about Allentown, especially the Historic District, is it’s still protected by the historic guidelines,” says Jonathan Campbell, the CEO of the Campbell Team and a Lehigh Valley native. Those guidelines mean any design changes must be approved by the Historic Architectural Review Board. “People are very prideful of the West Park area," Campbell says. "Homes there are just beautiful, and the key is that it’s just about five minutes to the center city of Allentown, where all the restaurants are and nightlife is.”

Century-old homes around West Park
Homes in the neighborhood live up to their historic billing, almost exclusively dating to the early 1900s on streets lining the park. “That whole area is a lot of older, Victorian homes,” Campbell says. “People really take care of their homes there.” Victorian townhouses are the most common design, and residential features can include covered porches and small front lawns. Prices typically span anywhere from $250,000 to $300,000. “People are usually either renting or looking for an older-style home,” Campbell says, noting that proximity to the commercial area is a benefit.

Musical performances at West Park
West Park plays host to the Allentown Band, which has endured for nearly 200 years after its formation in 1828 and is one of the oldest civilian bands in the country. They aren’t the only performers, since the square-shaped park hosts an annual summer concert series from May to September. West Park also has trails lined with foliage for walking or jogging. Nearby, Franklin Park is home to a community garden and playground. Less than 2 miles south of the neighborhood, the Lehigh Parkway sprawls across more than 600 acres with the Little Lehigh Creek winding through the middle of most of it. It’s lined with pathways unfurling under trees and over creeks, as well as a disc golf course and the Museum of Indian Culture, which spotlights Native American history through exhibits and artifacts.

Local restaurants along Tilghman Street
Dominican Restaurant, serving soups, salads and sandwiches, is the only eatery in the neighborhood. There are also a few establishments down West Turner Street, but Tilghman Street, which runs parallel several blocks north of West Turner, serves as the primary hub for shopping and dining. On and around Tilghman, diners can grab burgers at The Shanty on 19th, catch a game at Volpe’s Sports Bar or get scoops of ice cream at the Udder Bar. “There’s a lot of breweries down there,” Campbell says. Brü Daddy’s and Fegley’s Allentown Brew Works are among the most popular. The Allentown Farmers Market runs year-round from Thursday through Sunday. “That’s actually one of my favorite places,” Campbell says. “It’s very old-school and brings in all the farm vendors from the outskirt areas into downtown.” Groceries can be purchased at nearby CTown Supermarket or Supremo Food Market of Allentown.
