Built on brickworks like Alsip Co.
There's a lot of industry in action, from a Coca-Cola bottling plant to the headquarters for Griffith Foods. The village's history is connected to manufacturing; it became a base for Illinois brick production after the Alsip Brick Company was founded in 1885. By then, the Chicago River's clay had been used in brick manufacturing for decades. Brick is a hallmark of Chicago architecture, as fireproofing the city was paramount, especially following the Great Fire of 1871. "Alsip's history is deeply cherished by its residents, fostering a strong sense of pride and community spirit," says Minerva Reynolds, a broker associate with Equity Premier Real Estate.
Today, the community is fully embracing modern life: it even has its own app. Reynolds, an RES-NET REO certified agent, says, "Alsip has a combination of suburban charm and urban convenience."
Midcentury styles east of Cicero
Given the village's history, it's no surprise that many houses are brick. "Prospective homeowners can explore various housing styles, from affordable ranch-style homes to modern constructions, catering to various budgets and preferences," Reynolds says. East of Cicero Avenue, there are mainly midcentury styles in older, planned communities. Later builds, like split-levels, are more common on the west side. Multiunit buildings, including townhouses and renovated condominium complexes, are also common.
Home price samplings go from under $125,000 for a two-bedroom of 1,300 square feet or less to over $500,000 for a four-bedroom of up to 2,800 square feet. Most are in the $240,000 to $320,000 range.

Fountain Hills Golf Club, a public facility operated by the park district, has been rated as one of Chicagoland's top nine-hole courses. "A lot of people say we are the South Side's secret," says Danielle Companio, the food and beverage manager for Fountain Hills. "Not many know we're open year-round and have a full-service bar and restaurant." Diners at the BackNine enjoy views of the course and driving range. The club received "best golf course" and "best burger" designations in the Chicago Tribune's Daily Southtown 2023 "Best of Chicago's Southland." Companio says their banquet facility accommodates up to 100 guests.
