Though most of Guilderland Center’s southern half is occupied by the Northeastern Industrial Park, residents can still find a suburban atmosphere along Route 146 and the surrounding area. In addition to houses and the industrial park, the community is home to a massive 14-diamond baseball and softball complex that hosts rec and travel teams. In its residential areas, the neighborhood exudes the vibe of a forested retreat and is close enough to nearby Albany for a quick commute. “It’s got a great school district, it’s a great place to raise a family and it’s centrally located,” says Colin McDonald, a real estate broker with McDonald Real Estate Co. “You can pretty much be anywhere in a matter of minutes.” There’s close proximity to grocery stores, desirable restaurants, eateries, coffee shops and the Crossgates Mall.
Homes lining Route 146
Homes in Guilderland Center are primarily concentrated along Route 146, with a selection of architectural styles like colonials, Cape Cods, split-levels and ranch-style homes lining that thoroughfare and several streets branching off of it. “First-time homebuyers are typically looking at Cape Cods, multilevels and ranches,” McDonald says. “People can still build homes, and there’s a plethora of townhouse communities.” Some properties have enough backyard space for a pool, and single-family homes typically cost between $250,000 and $500,000. Larger homes can sell into the $600,000s, and architecture can date from anywhere from 19th-century residences to those constructed after 2000. Guilderland Center scores a 1 out of 10 CAP Index crime score, well below the national average of 4. Despite the proximity of the Northeastern Industrial Park, the facility’s impact on the community is minimal, according to Brian Brosen, a licensed associate broker and leader of the Capital Team; some nearby rental homes are the only properties close to it.
Athletes excel at Guilderland High School
Students can begin at Guilderland Elementary School, which scores an A-minus from Niche, before moving on to Farnsworth Middle School, also rated an A-minus. Guilderland High School also receives an A-minus rating from Niche, ranking 125th out of nearly 1,500 high schools statewide for athletes according to Niche, and its soccer and field hockey teams have recently won championships.
14 ballfields at Keenholts Park
Roger Keenholts Park, situated in the northern half of the neighborhood, is a baseball and softball mecca. It boasts 14 total diamonds, including Dutchmen Field, the largest of the facilities. The lighted diamond has previously played host to the Albany Dutchmen, a summer collegiate baseball team. Organized, recreational and travel teams all play at the park’s fields. Black Creek flows through the northern part of the neighborhood before sharply turning south, and anglers can either cast a line in the creek’s waters or at the Watervliet Reservoir to the north. East of the neighborhood, golfers can hit the links at either the Western Turnpike Golf Course or the Albany Country Club.
Crossgates Mall close by
A few local shops and restaurants sit within Guilderland Center, among them Mixed Breed Brewing, which can be found off Route 146 and close to Keenholts Park. Refuel Sandwiches & More specializes in fresh subs and burgers just south of the park. The popular Crossgates Mall is about 6 miles east, offering more shopping and dining. It encompasses more than 150 stores and restaurants, including shops like Macy’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and the LEGO Store; dining at the Cajun Café and ice cream at Frozen Lite; and entertainment by way of a Regal Cinemas location complete with an IMAX theater. “There’s also a new coffee shop that just opened up called the Scene,” McDonald says. A Walmart can also be found near the mall for groceries.
Guilderland Garden Club and summer concerts
A number of community events are held in and around Guilderland Center. Close to Mixed Breed Brewing, the Guilderland Garden Club holds some gatherings in the Mynderse-Frederick House, which has stood for almost 200 years. The club itself has endured for six decades, and both members and nonmembers can attend its meetings. Down Route 146, Tawasentha Park plays host to the Guilderland Performing Arts Center’s summer concert series and the longstanding Guilderland Town Band. The band has been around for more than 50 years, and its performances are held on the park’s stage. Various races, like an annual 5K, also take place at Tawasentha.
Highway access to the Albany region
Route 146, along which most homes in Guilderland Center are situated, is a primary connection to Schenectady, less than 10 miles away. Route 158 branches off northward from 146 just west of the neig hborhood, enabling motorists to reach Rotterdam less than 8 miles away. Route 20, also known as Western Avenue, crosses the entire state and runs just north of Guilderland Center, while central Albany is only about 15 miles east via Western Avenue and Interstate 90. “You can easily access the city of Albany and major thoroughfares like Interstate 87, the New York State Thruway and Interstate 90,” McDonald says. Canada is also just under 200 miles north via Interstate 87.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
