Meeker North is known as a place to settle down. "Halloween trick-or-treating is a big deal in Meeker North because so many people there have kids," says Realtor Collin Fett, who lived in the neighborhood for two years and sells houses there with RE/MAX Real Estate Center. "About half of our neighbors had been there for 10 to 20 years and would probably stay forever, and the other half was there to raise families." The nearby public schools are rated a B or above by Niche, and the closest elementary school is within walking distance. With well-maintained, mid-century homes that sell for about $100,000 less than Ames' median price, Meeker North is especially appealing for first-time buyers.

Brick and wood-exterior ranch styles
Throughout the neighborhood, old-growth oak trees shade the sidewalk-lined streets. "The streets are really quiet, so it's nice to take walks or bike rides and wave to neighbors, especially in the evenings," Fett says. The well-manicured lawns often include flower beds, gardens and patios. Many houses have attached garages and are mostly brick- and wood-exterior ranch styles built in the late 1950s. Fett says the houses have block foundations, and many have bulged over the years, so anchored retaining walls are often required to correct this issue. Homes in the neighborhood are priced from $230,000 to $380,000.
