Amityville is a quaint village on South Oyster Bay in the Suffolk County town of Babylon. Established in 1658 by Dutch settlers, Amityville is a staid but growing suburb of New York City on the southwestern quadrant of Long Island. The village is perhaps most famous as the setting for the bestselling book and hit 1979 film "The Amityville Horror." A mass murder in 1974 and reports of paranormal activity by subsequent residents of a Dutch Colonial house inspired the story. Today, residents seem amused by these associations with the neighborhood nicknamed “the friendly bay village.”

Navigating by train, car and water
Two peninsulas, or “necks,” as locals call them, make up the coastal part of the village and are split by several navigable fingertip canals running inland. The village is bisected by the Long Island Railroad, whose tracks divide the area. South Oyster Bay is bordered by Jones Beach Island and Fire Island, making Amityville somewhat of a beach town during the warmer months. Residents can enjoy three state parks and various beaches on the Atlantic Ocean less than 15 miles away. Amityville is also about 40 miles, or 1 hour and 20 minutes by train, from the world-class food and culture of New York City.
Victorians and Colonial Revivals with a median price of $600,000
Most houses are single-family residences but there are a few condos in the area, and new luxury apartment buildings are being constructed. Architectural styles range from remodeled Victorian and Colonial Revival-style homes on the southern waterfront to starter Craftsmans and ranch styles in the northern section. Roughly a third of the properties here are in federally designated flood zones. The median housing price is around $600,000, which is higher than the nationwide median.
