Welcome to Anahuac, the alligator capital of Texas, where waterfront living is a fundamental part of the neighborhood. The area is situated right next to Anahuac Lake and 9 miles from Trinity Bay. “It’s a growing community,” says Karyn Green, a Realtor with RE/MAX One-Premier Realty who has lived in the area her whole life. “Schools have grown so much that they had to build a bigger football and baseball stadium.” The community offers newly constructed traditional-style homes with mid-sized, manicured lawns and paved driveways ranging from $300,000 to $375,000. You’ll also see 1970s contemporary-style lakefront homes with large, grassy backyards full of trees ranging from $400,000 to $430,000.

Children in the neighborhood may attend Anahuac Elementary School, which has a B-minus from Niche and move on to Anahuac Middle School, which ranks in the top 130 for standout middle schools in Texas and has a B-plus from Niche. Students advance to Anahuac High School, which has a graduation rate of 92% and a B from Niche.

At Job Beason Park, you can relax while kayaking along the Bayou. “There’s lots of wildlife in Anahuac, especially near the bayous,” says Green. Enjoy more bayfront views at Cedar Hill Park, where 80-foot trees greet you, along with a 3-mile trail that you can walk or run along. History lovers can go back in time at Fort Anahuac Park, where the Texas Revolution took place in 1835. The park offers marshes where you can fish and a playground for children to adventure. It also hosts an annual alligator festival in the fall called GATORFEST, which honors the American alligator with three days of live music, food vendors and pageants.

You can find all your cooking staples and produce at Falcon Grocery or Brookshire Brothers. After getting your grocery shopping done, pick up a sweet treat at Denna Donuts. Head to Hartness Home Goods, the town's local gift shop, where you can buy homemade candles, car magnets, and incense. Start your weekend at The Beginning, known for its Mexican breakfast options. Meet friends at The Crawfish Place for seafood and a few games of pool.

Residents can take a break from reality and book a flight through Chambers County Airport, which is just about 1 mile from the neighborhood. Or take a drive down Interstate 10 to reach the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge Museum, which is located on the Texas Gulf Coast. In the spring and summer, you can meet rabbits, baby alligators and hermit crabs. In the fall and winter, you’ll be greeted by butterflies, coyotes and hawks. With the wonders of nature right outside your door in Anahuac, you might find yourself saying, “See ya later, alligator!”

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
