Endless outdoor fun in an Alaskan ski resort neighborhood
Alaska is known for its range of outdoor activities and scenic vistas, but perhaps no neighborhood in the state has as high a concentration of those activities as Alyeska. “It has phenomenal outdoor recreation. It’s not just a ski resort; it’s a year-round destination resort,” says Sam Daniel, an associate broker with Elite Real Estate Group and local resident. “There’s mountain biking, cross-country skiing, awesome downhill skiing and rafting opportunities. There’s just a plethora of things to do.” Alyeska is located in a glacial valley about 40 miles south of Downtown Anchorage. This isolation from the rest of the city, combined with a relatively small population, results in a close-knit community. Daniel says neighbors know each other and are invested in the community, supporting local businesses and the local elementary school. With several restaurants, a grocery store and four seasons of outdoor fun, Alyeska residents rarely need to leave the neighborhood.
Year-round adventure on Mt. Alyeska
Alyeska Resort is the largest ski resort in the state, with a 300-room hotel and over 1,600 acres of skiable area. With average lows of 14 degrees in January and an average snowfall of around 200 inches, it’s no wonder Alyeska is a top destination for skiing. The resort has 76 named trails covering all levels of difficulty and offers guided tours for first-time skiers. Cross-country skiing is also available at several trails around the neighborhood. During the summer, the mountain is open for hiking and mountain biking. Popular trails include the 3-mile Winner Creek Trail or the steep 2-mile North Face Trail. The aerial tram offers a relaxing way to enjoy views of the valley with a ride up the mountain. The Crow Pass Trail is a 21-mile trek through the Chugach Mountains that typically takes two or more days. The trail offers views of mountains and glaciers and crosses the Eagle River, ending up at the Eagle River Nature Center. For a more traditional park experience, Girdwood Park has a playground, tennis courts and a skate area.
Upscale dining and resort shopping in Alyeska
Alyeska has several restaurants in and around the neighborhood offering a variety of cuisines. “There’s no shortage of great coffee shops and there are two restaurants that are really phenomenal. Double Musky is a Cajun restaurant, and the other one is Jack Sprat, which is more of a fusion place. They just put down some absolutely fantastic food,” says Daniel. Double Musky Inn has been around since 1962 and features Alaskan steak and seafood with a New Orleans twist. The restaurant has received recognition from several publications, including being named one of Food Network’s ten favorite restaurants in the U.S. Jack Sprat serves a mix of American and Asian dishes in an upscale chalet. Groceries are available at Crow Creek Mercantile, and a few small stores in the neighborhood sell home goods and outdoor equipment. For any other shopping, residents will have to make the drive to Anchorage.
Cabins and Alaskan ski chalets
Homes in Alyeska are often cabins or chalet-style houses with spacious porches and large windows. There are some contemporary homes throughout the neighborhood as well. Many are built out of wood, adding a rustic feel to the houses. The median lot size is just over a quarter acre, but the dense trees add plenty of privacy. The small gravel roads add to the rural feel of the neighborhood. Homes in the neighborhood under 2,000 square feet can cost between $625,000 and $880,000. Larger homes range from $1 million to $1.7 million. There are also some condos in the area that cost between $430,000 and $530,000. Buyers should know the neighborhood has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Highly rated Girdwood community school
Girdwood School serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade and gets an A-minus from Niche. Students can participate in the Ski Day program, where they go skiing for half the school day six times a year. South Anchorage High School is also rated an A-minus and is about a 45-minute drive north of the neighborhood. The school has nearly 1,300 students and offers many AP and career and technical education courses. It also has an Air Force JROTC program.
A long commute to Anchorage
Some parts of Alyeska are walkable, but most people drive to get around the neighborhood. Glacier Valley Transit offers bus service, connecting riders to destinations like the hotel, the resort’s day lodge and Seward Highway. Downtown Anchorage is roughly 50 minutes along Seward Highway. Other destinations like Providence Alaska Medical Center and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport are also about 40 miles away.
