Isolated from the noise of the mainland, Anderson Island is a tiny spot where residents can live the quiet island lifestyle. “Seclusion, water and golfing. Those are the top reasons why people buy over there,” says Realtor Monty Sisson of Coldwell Banker, with 146 closed sales.
On this island, most streets are grouped to the northwest and southeastern points. The latter’s streets hug the side of the island and bend around Josephine Lake, giving the appearance of a planned community. Winding streets matching the natural twists and turns of the island’s geography feature bungalows, split levels and ranch homes. Pricing varies widely, starting at around $350,000 for a contemporary two-bedroom all the way to a three-bedroom prairie next to the golf course for $850,000. Variations on these basic styles are scattered around the island, with vacant plots of land for sale as well.
Kids living on Anderson Island will, as you’d expect, attend Anderson Island Elementary. With an emphasis on the social and emotional well-being of students, more than 200 of their staff are trained to apply these principles. Since “Anderson Island is only accessible by ferry,” says Sisson, kids moving on to Pioneer Middle will need to cross the water to attend class. The same is true for kids attending Steilacoom High. These teens also benefit from a group of trauma-informed counselors. All three schools boast a Niche rating of A-minus.
Although much of the action happens on the mainland, there is still plenty of fun to be had at this island’s various parks. Lowell Johnson Park encircles Florence Lake, a spot for residents to practice their front crawl or sit on the grassy beach. There is also a diving platform for the more adventurous swimmers. Dogs aren’t allowed here, but don’t fret; they’re welcome on the west side of the island at Freddie’s Off-Leash Dog Park. The spot is fenced, so you can let your dog run free without worry. If you’d prefer to supervise your dog on a walk, there is also Andy’s Wildlife Trail connected to it for ease of access.
Dining on the island itself is limited, but that doesn’t stop residents from enjoying the menu at the Community Club’s Riviera Lakeshore Restaurant. With an excellent view of Lake Josephine and the wildlife, it’s no surprise reservations fill up quickly. Sit and have a drink or enjoy a full entrée of fish and chips or a ribeye. For your grocery needs, there’s a Safeway and Target located on 100th Street, about six miles from the Ferry Dock. Luckily, bus route 212 runs from the dock into Clover Park every hour. In the same complex is a Barnes and Noble, so you can grab that classic you’ve been meaning to read. Or stop into PetSmart for some toys.
The downside of Anderson Island living is the transportation. If exploring nature and appreciating what its various parks have to offer isn’t your speed, you’ll have to take the ferry inland for other entertainment. Catch a movie with friends or family at the AMC theater in the same shopping center as Safeway. Back on the island, spend a day at the South Sound Sailing Tours with Captain Corey. He offers a handful of options like half-day sailing, all-day sailing, or just a brief evening sunset sailing experience.
On Anderson Island, you can enjoy privacy and seclusion, but if you long for civilization, it’s just a quick ferry ride away.
