The Bromley Park area is named after its central green space, but a more defining characteristic is its proximity to Thurston Elementary School. It's a neighborhood where kids take the sidewalks to school, and one of the most significant local events is the Thurston Community Players' next theater production. However, Justin Ham, a Broker with the Ham Realty Group, says, "While you will find lots of families here, there is a wide range of ages and lifestyles represented in the Bromley Park area." And there's more than just the elementary school in this quiet northside neighborhood — it also offers a walkable shopping center, a local library and a protected nature area.

Events and community at Thurston Elementary
Thurston Elementary School sits on the neighborhood's east side, less than a half mile from any home. The school, which has an A grade from Niche, is a source of community for many of the residents. An active Parent Teacher Organization plans events like an outdoor read-a-thon, and kids can visit the school's multiple play structures for weekend playdates. Older kids move on to Clague Middle School and Huron High School, which both get A-plus ratings from Niche.

A park, pool and protected nature area
All residents sit within minutes of the small Bromley Park, which has an open field, play structures and a hidden lending library. For more outdoor fun, many residents invest in a membership at Orchard Hills Athletic Club (OHAC), less than a mile away. OHAC is a non-profit that offers a public pool, swim classes and lessons. It's a real hub for the surrounding community during the summer and has a popular Fourth of July party. The OHAC also partners with the Thurston PTO to maintain the 20-acre Thurston Nature Center. The ecologically diverse park is open to the public year-round. On Michigan's coldest days, the frozen lake becomes a casual ice rink, and a blooming butterfly garden brings colorful visitors in warmer weather.

Older homes at more affordable prices
Homes around Bromley Park are predominantly low-slung ranch styles, with some larger Colonials, most dating back to the mid-1900s. The streets have a secluded feel, shaded by mature trees. Wide sidewalks and clearly marked crosswalks mean many parents feel comfortable letting their kids walk to school. And frequent cul-de-sacs offer a spot for kids to spend after-school play dates. Prices start around $400,000 for three-bedroom homes and up to $600,000 for recently renovated four-bedroom properties. These prices are relatively affordable when compared to the rest of Ann Arbor, especially for a neighborhood around an elementary school.

Strips mall selections within walking distance
Plymouth Road has grocery stores, including Kroger, Busch's and Plum Market. Among typical strip mall selections for food, some standouts include Songbird Café, a popular spot to work on a laptop, and the family-owned gastropub Rappourt, which has a hopping happy hour. And since everything is less than a mile away, residents enjoy walking when the weather is nice. The lively downtown Ann Arbor is just 3 miles further down Plymouth Road, but parking in the city center can be tricky.

The local library and North Campus
Ann Arbor is known for its excellent library system, and the Traverwood Branch Library sits about a 1/2 mile away from Bromley Park. "Traverwood was built using ash trees from the nearby forest," says Richard Retyi, Ann Arbor District Library's communications & marketing director. "The warm wood makes it a really nice space — of our libraries, it's probably the most beautiful." Traverwood has regular family-friendly events like craft nights, and it's not uncommon to see the library's study rooms filled with University of Michigan students since North Campus is right next door. The university's North Campus is much quieter than its lively downtown campus, and Bromley Park is a bit too suburban to attract a student population.

GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
