Ann Arbor's affordable southeast corner
Southeast Ann Arbor sits at the edge of city limits, bound by the bustling Interstate 95 and Route 23. Although it is less walkable than downtown, several surrounding nature areas offer biking and walking paths. And the neighborhoods that sit around Mitchell Elementary and Scarlett Middle schools are lined with sidewalks. So, even though it's a more suburban location, the neighborhood still holds on to some of that Ann Arbor small-town charm. Distance from the city also comes with the most notable benefit — lower prices. With an average price of around $300,000, Southeast Ann Arbor is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in the city.

Next door to nature preserves
The Scarlett-Mitchell Nature Area sits around the schools, and Mary Beth Doyle Park has a disc golf course and trails along Malletts Creek. "There's a lot of neighborhood enthusiasm about nature over there," says Tina Stephens, the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator with Nature Area Preservation, a branch of the city's Parks and Recreation. "And we have a good relationship with the schools, so sometimes school groups volunteer or do nature walks." Malletts Creek's shallow basin attracts unique bird species, and the sounds of frog calls can be heard from the Scarlett-Mitchell Woods. The NAP will occasionally perform controlled burns to maintain the nature areas. "We are very careful, give plenty of notice, and have a meeting where residents can ask questions about the burns," Stephens says.

East access to eastern Michigan
With proximity to Interstate 94 and Route 23, residents of Southeast Ann Arbor have easy access to commuting in all directions. It might have been a more noisy neighborhood if not for the location of the nature areas, which create a buffer between the homes and the major streets. Due to its location in the city, Southeast Ann Arbor is especially well-placed for those who want easy access out east to the shops and restaurants in Ypsilanti, the Wayne County International Airport and eventually, Detroit. Downtown Ann Arbor, accessible via bus, is 5 miles north and home to major employers like the University of Michigan and the University Hospital.

And for contemporary condos, prices go up to $350,000. About half of the streets have sidewalks, and mature trees shade all the yards of most homes.

International Baccalaureate Program for K-12
Most kids in Southwest Ann Arbor attend Mitchell Elementary and Scarlett Middle, which sit beside each other within the neighborhood. Mitchell Elementary gets an A-minus rating from Niche, and Scarlett Middle receives an A. They both offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, which encourages a global approach to learning. The IB program can be continued at Huron High School. Like all of Ann Arbor's high schools, Huron has a top rating of A-plus. However, it stands apart from the others as the only school to also get an A-plus grade for its diversity.

Local restaurants and library
Packard Street runs north of the neighborhood and is lined with strip malls. Locals enjoy a few hidden gems here, like the Yemeni coffee shop Socotra, known for its high-quality brews and authentic pastries. Tacos are a favorite at Tmaz, a family-owned Mexican restaurant, and Achilles has an old-school diner feel with classic American fare. There are a few small markets right outside the neighborhood, like Bombay Grocers and Galleria Asian Market, and right across Route 23, there is a Target and Meijer. Also within the neighborhood, the Malletts Creek Branch Library has regular event programming. "Malletts Creek is the smallest of our libraries, but it is the third most popular in terms of numbers going through the door," says Richard Retyi, the communications & marketing director with the Ann Arbor District Library. "People who go there really love their library."
