West Falls Church is central to Fairfax County's best parks and shopping centers
Sitting 10 miles from the nation’s capital, West Falls Church is an active community outside of D.C.’s hustle and bustle. “The location is excellent. The road system is great, so it never feels like you’re dealing with D.C. traffic,” said Samson Properties Realtor Brenda Ureke. With a strong school district and a wide variety of exercise and entertainment options, it’s easy to see why residents love living in West Falls Church. “If you want to go to the city you can easily take the metro, but with so much to do in Fairfax County, everything you need is right here.” Fairfax County is flush with annual events and diverse dining options that make a night out to a new place exciting.
Try starstruck sandwiches at Celebrity Deli
Residents swear by La Tingeria, about a mile north of West Falls Church, once a food truck whose popularity turned it into a brick-and-mortar location along South Washington Street. La Tingeria serves juicy birria tacos with halal meat and has been featured in the Washington Post. Celebrity Deli is the go-to spot in West Falls Church for larger-than-life sandwiches, inspired by famous movies and television shows. Try anything from a salmon salad to the potato matzoh soup or specialty subs like the Ted Lasso and Red October. For an authentic Italian dinner, Anthony’s Restaurant serves up hot pizzas, chicken cacciatore and stuffed shells. West Falls Church residents have their pick of several grocery chains, with Giant Food in the Graham Park Plaza on the north end of the neighborhood, Safeway in the Little River Shopping Center to the south, and an ALDI a block north of the neighborhood border. Residents can also browse harder-to-find options at Bestway Supermarket, sourcing spices, fresh meats and produce for the region’s multicultural palettes. Just 3 miles from West Falls Church sits the Mosaic District, a newer mixed-use development with over 30 retail shops, including Target and Barnes & Noble; it's a favorite spot among locals. Shoppers show up for events along the central street of Strawberry Lane, such as the year-round Sunday farmers market, as well as outdoor yoga and live music. They stay later to catch the latest hit movies at Angelika Film Center. Locals can also order a quick lunch from Uber Eats food delivery robots that can be seen roving around the District.
Holmes Run Park spreads through the south of the neighborhood
“The people here are active and into exercising,” says Ureke, and it's easy to see why, with so many recreational activities. Sleepy Hollow Park has blacktop trails for running and hiking trails near Tripps Run Stream. More trails, as well as basketball hoops and playground equipment, are available at nearby Bel Air Park. Locals hit the tennis courts at Round Tree Park and stick around for lunch at the nearby picnic tables. For a full workout, the Providence Rec Center has full cardio and weight rooms, as well as access to a pool and spa. Providence is right next to Falls Church High, and it's where the Jaguars swim team practices after school. A brief walk past the rec center leads to Holmes Run Trail and Park, where dense foliage and a small stream provide calming natural views in the midst of the suburban sprawl. It branches off to Luria Park’s playground and loop trail, great for a game of catch or bike riding with the family.
Midcentury Cape Cods get remodeled to fit modern needs
There are a variety of homes in West Falls Church, from modest lakeside units in the $300,000 price range at The Cove Condominiums to large colonials and new construction Traditional styles upward of $1.5 million. Most of the neighborhood’s original Cape Cods from the 1940s and 1950s still stand, and it's very popular to expand and remodel these properties for extra elbow room. Secluded six-bedroom detached homes with vast yards are further to the east toward Tripps Run Stream. There are also new developments like Graham Park Townhomes that sit next to Arlington Boulevard for easy commutes to D.C. or shopping in either direction. Further from the action, winding streets are lined by mature trees, which also shade wide paved sidewalks that are perfect for walking pets. Residents here take advantage of their large properties to plant flowers and shrubs. Thanks to the abundant sidewalks, locals are always a brief walk to the shops along Arlington Boulevard.
Falls Church High's football rivalry brings out the community
Students are served by Fairfax County Public Schools, beginning at Westlawn Elementary, with a B-minus Niche rating. “Families will move here specifically for the schools,” says Ureke. Westlawn offers Spanish and Vietnamese parent liaisons and promotes outings like Family Math Night to encourage a community approach to learning. Students then attend Jackson Middle School, which earns a B-plus on Niche. Finally, Falls Church High School has a B-minus rating, and Ureke has this to say: “The teachers at Falls Church High care; you can tell they really want to see the kids succeed.” Falls Church High’s Jaguar football games often bring the neighborhood together on Friday nights in the fall. The historic “Bell Game” is the penultimate game in the season, where the Jags play against their rival, the Justice High Wolves, to decide which school gets to keep a 60-year-old bell from a U.S. Navy battleship for the next year. The Bell Game is also dubbed the “Battle of the Beltway" because of the two schools’ proximity to the Capitol Beltway.
Browse the Falls Church Farmers Market or see Lake Barcroft's fireworks
The area is central to northern Virginia’s many special events throughout the year. Falls Church local and Realtor with McEnearney Commercial, Susan Tull O’Reilly, says, “There’s this great farmers market in the city of Falls Church on Saturday mornings and nearby Lake Barcroft for Fourth of July fireworks.” The Falls Church Farmers’ Market is in the parking lot of the town's city hall, and local vendors from all around the county sell everything from produce and pastries to artisan-crafted goods. Lake Barcroft hosts a large fireworks show on the 4th of July, and O’Reilly adds, “There are lots of kids running on Halloween, but people from all different walks of life live here comfortably.”
Arlington Boulevard and the Beltway are right next to home
Commuters to D.C. can take Arlington Boulevard 10 miles to reach the nation’s capital, or 9 miles to Ronald Reagan Airport, a huge air travel hub. By train, the West Falls Church metro station and East Falls Church metro stations are both 3 miles north and can take riders to points of interest in Arlington, D.C. and Maryland in under an hour. Greater access to the whole DMV area is available on the Capitol Beltway, which is also the neighborhood’s western border. The Beltway also leads West Falls Church locals to Tysons Corner Center, the biggest mall in the D.C.-Baltimore area, in just 4 miles, so ample shopping and upscale dining are nearby.
