Rural Neighborhood in Aquasco, Maryland
Prince George's County 20608, 20613
The decidedly rural environs of South Prince George’s County attract residents from a variety of backgrounds. The area’s history is, of course, agricultural, and many working farmers still live in the area. However, in recent years the area has become a popular landing spot for both retirees who want to enjoy a more rustic lifestyle while keeping within a short drive of DC and commuters who don’t mind a bit of a drive if it means a bit more acreage and square footage when they get home.
As you might expect, the houses in South Prince George’s County are considerably more varied than neighborhoods closer to the city. Historic farmhouses and mid-century ranches are common, but so are modern developments featuring New Traditional two-story homes and updated amenities. It’s also common for incoming residents to simply buy a lot and build a home to their own specifications. As a consequence of all this, home prices in the area vary considerably. Land parcels range from $25,000 for a single housing plot up to hundreds of thousands of dollars for larger arable lots. Houses, meanwhile, can sell for anywhere from $300,000 for a mid-century ranch near Eagle Harbor, while modern builds closer to the suburbs typically go for $650,000 to $1 million and offer between 2,500 and 4,500 square feet of space.
Depending on what part of the neighborhood you’re in, shopping can be either a breeze or a bit of a hassle. There are a number of shopping centers and supermarkets along State Highway 5, which separates South Prince George’s from the DC exurbs — for many residents, these retailers are just a short drive, or even a short walk, away. However, for those that live nearer to the Patuxent River, it can be 20 minutes by car to the nearest major grocery store.
The area’s restaurants are similarly concentrated along the west side of the neighborhood. The towns there offer a wide selection of highly-rated options, from Mexican restaurant La Sierra to Indish Exotic Indian Bar and Grill. Those looking to eat at home will appreciate the fresh produce sold at many of the local farms in the area.
Recreational opportunities in South Prince George’s County are ample, particularly if you enjoy the outdoors. The Patuxent River is perfect for fishing and kayaking, Cedarville State Forest offers miles of hiking trails, and there are a number of equestrian farms in the area that offer riding lessons and boarding. Those looking to just relax and enjoy the outdoors will appreciate the many wineries in the area, along with the pumpkin patches that draw crowds every fall.
The area is covered by the Prince George’s County Public School District. Many local students attend Baden Elementary, Gwynn Park Middle School and Gwynn Park High School, which is rated 6 out of 10 on GreatSchools.
South Prince George’s County isn’t for everyone, but if you love the outdoors and don’t mind going a bit out of your way for groceries and everyday necessities, it’s hard to imagine a better landing spot within commuting range of DC.
