With the Lackawanna River running through the borough, Archbald is a serene, scenic village that is home to the expansive 150-acre Archbald Pothole State Park, trendy neighborhood stores, eclectically styled houses and major employers such as Amazon and Chewy. “I like that this is an accessible neighborhood with small shops and local restaurants, which makes it very homey. The community is welcoming and family-oriented; there’s always support for fundraisers and community events,” says Fawn Contrecas, who is an Archbald local and works as the Head of E-Services at the Valley Community Library.

Residential architecture in Archbald

“There are many generational homes in the area with long-term residents. Most houses are sold within 30 days on the market,” says Janine Christian, a real estate agent with over 10 years of experience at ERA One Source Realty. Residential properties in Archbald vary greatly from Tudor Revival and Victorian to ranch-style, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod architecture. Set on small, green hills and streets, many houses were built from the 1920s to the present day. A single-family home with three bedrooms can list between $200,000 and $450,000. Properties tend to have nicely kept front lawns and average about 10,000 square feet.

Education in Archbald

Students are zoned for the Valley View School District, which according to Christian, has “some of the top schools in the region.” Prospective schools include Valley View Elementary School and Valley View Intermediate School, both of which are ranked B-minus by Niche. Valley View Middle School has a C rating, and Valley View High School gets a B-minus score with 87% of students retaining proficiency in reading and 72% in math.

Recreation outlets in Lackawanna County

There are more than 10 playgrounds and parks scattered throughout the neighborhood for young kids to play and exercise. As part of the strip mine land reclamation process, the state has implemented baseball and soccer fields and tennis courts in Ed Staback Memorial Park. With paved trails through the woods, people also come to the park for bird watching, walking with their dogs and enjoying the natural scenery. Aylesworth Creek Lake and Chapman Lake are popular destinations for fishing and boating. In wintertime, families can hit the ski slopes at the Montage Mountain Resorts.

Shops around Archbald

On a fun day out, stop by Old & Brew for local roasts and browse the store’s vintage kitchenware collection. Try on retro fashion pieces from Eclectic City Vintage, which is also located at the coffee shop. La Padranos is a neighborhood pizzeria known for its vodka pizza slices. Loco Hombre, serving authentic Mexican dishes such as tacos and tortilla bowls, is another popular option. Residents like to go to the local grocery store Quinn’s Market for fresh produce, or they can stock up on home essentials at Walmart, Target or Aldi in Dickson City, which is about 7 miles west of Archbald.

Celebrations at the Valley Community Library

The Valley Community Library is an important gathering place for residents. “We organize many drives and fundraisers throughout the year to help charitable causes. Our new community fridge outside the library is almost always fully stocked (thanks to local restaurants and individual households) to support community members in need (no questions asked). Coming up in September we will have a community cleanup walk for trash picking. It’s always a great turnout and a good way to keep our areas looking really nice,” Contrecas says. “We also have fun events such as the Q-Club Holiday Party, Board Game Nights and arts and crafts workshops.” Notable festivals near Archbald include the Dickson City Civic Center Winter Craft and Vendor Fair and the Pittston Tomato Festival.

Regional access points

Although most people navigate the area with a car, the County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS) has bus stops throughout Lackawanna County. The nearest hospital is the Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, which is located 9 miles to the northeast via Interstate 81. Interstate 476 provides a convenient commute into Philadelphia and U.S. Route 11 can take one to Northeastern New York. For flights, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport is about 18 miles away.

Important to know

As a mining state, Pennsylvania currently has 9,977 abandoned mines that have environmental or health impacts. Acid mine drainage (AMD), which is the outflow of highly acidic water with heavy metals, through abandoned mines causes groundwater and drinking water contamination, soil contamination and infrastructure erosion. Under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) of 1977, the state is implementing strip mine reclamation projects to reclaim hazards such as AMD and mine subsidence and to reestablish vegetation cover over abandoned mines to recreate a balanced habitat.
