The Archbold we know today wouldn’t exist without the ingenuity and vision of Erie J. Sauder, a native son who invented the knock-down table in 1951 and built one of the largest ready-to-assemble furniture companies in the United States. Almost 30 years after his death, Sauder Manufacturing and Sauder Woodworking are still the city’s top employers. Not bad for a cabinet maker with an eighth-grade education. Aside from his economic contributions to the city, Erie built Sauder Village, which takes visitors back in time to Midwest towns as they would have looked from 1800 through the 1920s. Visitors can take buggy rides through pioneer settlements and homesteads or walk down the 1920s-style Main Street, where they can stop in at a classic candy store or catch a moving picture at the theater. To see a Midwestern town as it looks today, people only need to head a little way south down Defiance Street, which is lined with charming restaurants operating out of connected brick buildings from the early 20th century. Within blocks of Defiance Street, there are highly rated schools, over-century-old churches and well-kept homes where residents break bread over dining room tables that were likely made in Archbold.

Cottages and ranch-style homes
The city’s sidewalk-lined residential blocks branch off Defiance Street. The tree-shaded yards are suitable for gardens and barbecues. The median single-family home price is $207,000, compared to Toledo's $125,000 median home price. Prices range from $125,000 to $500,000. There are tidy cottages and two-story wood-frame houses built between the late 1800s and the 1940s. The suburban streets are also lined with mid-century brick ranch styles and contemporary-style homes with manicured lawns. Residents hopefully won’t mind the occasional train whistle from the nearby tracks. “It’s a small, very nice area. People like the rural quality,” says Realtor Bart Westfall, who sells homes in the city with Wilson Auction & Realty Co.

Restaurants line South Defiance Street. When patrons pull up to Mom’s Diner & Pizzeria, they’ll see a stainless-steel storefront decorated with vintage Pepsi and Coca-Cola signs. Inside, neon lights glow, and classic tunes play on a jukebox. Next door, Downtown Restaurant serves Latin American-inspired dishes in a Southwestern-style atmosphere while live bands play. Sauder Village’s Barn Restaurant has a rustic interior with vaulted ceilings and chandeliers fashioned from wagon wheels. Meat and potatoes are a hit menu item. “The biggest downside of Archbold is that there isn’t much shopping,” says Realtor Brittany Funk, who sells homes in the city with Key Realty LTD.
