Unparalleled views from a tower above the landscape
Red Hill Fire Tower sits atop the 2,990-foot-tall mountain of the same name in Denning, and its 60-foot framework allows visitors unparalleled vistas of the Catskill High Peaks from more than 3,000 feet up. In the fall, the trees turning colors makes the view from the historic site even more spectacular. The century-old tower is one of the most notable landmarks in Denning, an isolated region with a population that has hovered around 500 each census since the late 20th century. The neighborhood mostly consists of the Catskill Mountains’ dense foliage, a few small hamlets and both branches of the Neversink River, meaning its small population is constantly surrounded by nature. “The main thing here is all the natural beauty that surrounds the whole town,” says Alex Stier, a NYS licensed associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North.
Trails winding through forests and preserves
The Catskill Mountains and Catskill Forest Preserve aren’t the only significant recreational feature in Denning. The Red Hill Fire Tower Trail leads the adventurous right up to the tower itself via a four-mile, out-and-back trail, while Denning Road ends near the East Branch of the Neversink River, blending into a trailhead that leads to a path disappearing into the woods. Slide Mountain Wilderness Area and Sundown Wild Forest both take up much of the neighborhood, and swimming in the blue waters of Peekamoose Blue Hole in the latter is a popular draw. Lone, Peekamoose and Table Mountains all rise almost 4,000 feet skyward, and much of the land is operated by conservation and environmental agencies as part of the Catskills. “Buttermilk Falls and the Neversink River are beautiful,” Stier says. Small vessels are the primary means of recreation on the rivers, including canoes and kayaks.
The Big Indian Wilderness also sits north of Denning, while the Rondout Reservoir is situated just over 10 miles south. With permits, residents of the area can fish, boat and hunt in and near the reservoir, but restrictions are in place to limit recreation and the area is patrolled by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Police. The Frost Valley YMCA is situated up West Branch Road and focuses on environmental education and camping.
Swimming in the Peekamoose Blue Hole in Denning is a top attraction in the Catskills.
The hike to the Red Hill Fire Tower is about two-mile long, with magnificent vistas at the end.

"You also have Urban Cowboy Lodge, a tavern and restaurant,” Stier says. “For larger events, there’s the Full Moon Resort.” Both are about 20 miles away on West Branch Road and offer rustic surroundings for guests. Other hotels and inns are in the same area, while Slide Mountain Forest House has a German bar-and-grill atmosphere and serves as both a lodge and a pub.
