Isolated streets within foliage in southeastern New York
From the air, Hardenburgh simply appears to be a streak of dense green foliage, and that’s exactly what makes it striking among other southeastern New York neighborhoods. The neighborhood is primarily comprised of portions of the Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest, which spans nearly 15,000 acres of wilderness. Hardenburgh is a popular place for pastimes like hiking, fishing and camping, and the neighborhood also has a few streets and properties that blend into the landscape. “It’s that rural,” says Alex Stier, a NYS licensed associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North. “Some areas, you have cell service, some areas you don’t, but that whole area in Hardenburgh is very, very rural with few homes.”

Roughing it outdoors or finding Zen in a ‘forever wild’ preserve
Regardless of time of year, the Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest is open for recreation and doesn’t charge for admission. The wilderness spans over 13,500 acres and is considered “forever wild” in its preservation, meaning it’s legally, permanently protected against development. Some of its visitors set up a campsite and rough it under the stars. Others go for hikes on the trails lining the preserve, while still others bike, hunt, cast a line in lakes or streams, set out in small craft on Alder Lake; winter recreation includes snowshoeing and skiing. “If you’re a hiker, you could have a wonderful time, as long as you watch out for snakes,” Stier says. “Licensed hunting and licensed fishing go a long way here, but after that the main activity is hiking and mountain climbing. That’s whether you go up to Slide Mountain, which is one of the famous hikes, or dip into one of the mountain streams to cool off.”
One of the most unique features of Hardenburgh is Dai Bosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji, a Buddhist monastery close to Beecher Lake that’s operated for almost 50 years. Visitors to the temple can find inner Zen in the peace of the Catskills. Weather in the area can vary, though, so it’s recommended to check in on the forecast before heading on an outdoor journey. “If it’s raining in Kingston, sometimes it’s snowing up in the mountains,” Stier says.

A restaurant embodying its nature-filled surroundings
Residents head about nine miles east to Peekamoose Restaurant & Tap Room, which sits on Route 28. Skulls and deer heads adorn the walls in an interior designed to evoke its exterior surroundings, with fallen trees refitted into furniture and more. Its staff serves up locally-sourced American fare, while up the road and closer to Hardenburgh, a couple more establishments sit near Route 28. Goatie Whites dishes out pizza and ice cream, and The Print House sits nearby and puts on live music while serving cocktails. The closest retail stops are Walmart and Target locations, both about 45 miles east in Kingston.

Scattered homes amid the wilderness
Properties are few and far between in Hardenburgh. “It’s low inventory and priced right,” Stier says. “The metro New Yorkers usually buy the properties for their second home.” Styles range from custom and farmhouse architecture to mountain cabins and cottages, as well as some more standard designs like ranch-style homes. Prices vary widely, with some homes below $400,000, some closer to $800,000 and others above $1 million. Sizable parcels of land also come up for sale, with large acreages stretching into the million-dollar range or more. “If you get four or five homes that are even available to look at, you might have one home that, years ago, might have been $100,000 and now it’s $250,000,” Stier says, adding that examples include a small cottage on multiple acres. “The land is very expensive. There isn’t much inventory up there because there just aren’t many people. Same with the roadways.”
