Colonial charm in cozy Arlington neighborhood
Claremont is a quaint residential neighborhood in southwest Arlington that charms with its colonial revival architecture and tree-lined streets and attracts families with its ample parks and highly rated schools. The neighborhood is conveniently located near various retail centers with local restaurants mixed in, so residents have easy access to everything they might need. The commitment to colonial-inspired architecture makes walking its streets like traveling back in time, but with homes often offering updated interiors, residents don’t have to sacrifice modern amenities. “The community evolved post World War II,” says Realtor Joy Deevy, a native Northern Virginian with over 20 years of experience in the Washington metro area, who grew up frequenting the neighborhood’s Barcroft Park. “Many of the original homes are still present, including the Cape Cod, the colonial, and then in the 1960s, the ranch-style homes.”
Cape Cods, colonials and ranch-style homes
Housing in Claremont is a mix of single-family homes and condos, with colonial revival architecture and brick and vinyl siding being standard. Homes sit on cozy tree-lined streets with short front yards and sidewalks fit for strolling. Modernity meets classic charm in this neighborhood: though the homes’ exteriors resemble colonial-era architecture, many have fully updated interiors to accommodate a contemporary lifestyle. Prices start around $250,000 for a one-bedroom condo and get as high as $1.4 million for a five-bedroom home, with a median price of $675,000 overall and $850,000 for a single-family home. “If you are looking to purchase a detached home here, you can find a three-bedroom, two-full-bath for $750,000 to $850,000 for one of the neighborhood’s original homes,” Deevy says.
Shopping and dining in Claremont
On weekends, Claremont residents grab brunch at Silver Diner, a regional chain that charms with its old-school diner vibe. The local Peruvian spot Edy’s Chicken & Steak Restaurant is another local favorite, with rotisserie chicken and yuca fries being popular menu items. Soccer fans hang out at Babylon Futbol Café, which serves drinks and plays all the international soccer games, and Nazret Ethiopian Restaurant is the neighborhood spot for authentic Ethiopian food. Residents get their shopping done at the retail centers on Leesburg Pike, which house shops like Target, Petco and Ross and grocery stores like Giant Food and Trader Joe’s.
Seasonal events and the Marine Corps Marathon
Arlington hosts various events throughout the year, like the Arlington Festival of the Arts in the spring, Arlington County Fair in the summer and Rosslyn Jazz Fest and Marine Corps Marathon in the fall. One of the world’s largest marathons, the Marine Corps Marathon kicks off between the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery and finishes at the Marine Corps War Memorial.
Immersion options in Arlington Public Schools
Students in Claremont attend Arlington Public Schools, starting with Abingdon Elementary School, which received a B rating on the educational review site, Niche, or Claremont Immersion School, which received an A-minus and teaches lessons in both Spanish and English. They then continue to Jefferson Middle School and Wakefield High School, both of which received A-minuses. Nearby, Guidepost Montessori at West Alex offers parents a private education option for students ages 16 months through 12 years.
Barcroft Park and the Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center
The 65-acre Barcroft Park is Claremont’s primary public green space, with extensive athletic facilities, including batting cages, volleyball courts and baseball diamonds. The park also has a trail along a stream, playgrounds and a sheltered picnic area. Its adjacent Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center has exercise equipment for Claremont residents and is known for its gymnastics program.
Getting around Arlington and D.C.
Claremont is conveniently located near Interstate 395, which takes residents into D.C. The closest hospital to Claremont is VHC Health, four miles north of the neighborhood, and the nearest airport is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, six miles east. Arlington Transit has bus lines down Dinwiddie Street and Four Mile Run Drive, connecting residents to broader Arlington.
