Explore the Fascinating past of Maywood, Arlington.
A preserved example of early 20th-century Arlington
There's more than one reason someone may consider the Arlington neighborhood of Maywood a throwback to an earlier era. To RLAH @Properties Realtor Shirah Cohen, it’s the houses. Founded in 1909, the Arlington neighborhood serves as a showcase of early 20th-century architecture that has been preserved thanks to community regulations. To Maywood Community Association President Marc Koblentz, it’s the interactions between neighbors in the 326-home community. “A lot of the young kids play together, people walk around and say hello to each other and everyone looks out for each other in a way that’s kind of a throwback.” Though the neighborhood is a snapshot of Arlington more than a century ago, its location along a highway and 5 miles from Washington, D.C., means modern amenities are never far away. “It doesn’t feel like you’re right outside of the city when you’re here in the neighborhood,” Koblentz says.
Creating ‘porch envy’
Arlington County and the National Register of Historic Places recognize Maywood as a historic district. As a result, residents must follow certain guidelines when renovating their homes’ exteriors to preserve the neighborhood’s character. Homes were built in a variety of early 1900s styles, including Queen Annes, bungalows and Colonial Revivals. Though the architecture varies, Cohen says one feature is common from block to block. “The best thing is almost every house has a wonderfully large front porch, which isn’t common in Arlington,” says Cohen, a 30-year Arlington resident. “I have a little bit of porch envy when I go through it.” Not every street has a sidewalk, but the lack of traffic in the neighborhood and the abundance of shade trees make it possible to walk throughout. A few condos are on the edge of the neighborhood, just off Langston Boulevard. They cost between $325,000 and $500,000. Single-family prices vary from $900,000 to $1.5 million.

Shopping and dining along Langston Boulevard
Maywood has a vintage charm, but it borders Langston Boulevard, a highway lined with strip malls, supermarkets and restaurants. Locals can get groceries at the neighborhood Safeway, or drive further down Langston Boulevard to stop at Walgreens or The Italian Store. The latter is a supermarket carrying Italian ingredients, wine and pizza. Every house is within a mile's walk of a handful of restaurants, including Pines of Florence Italian restaurant and Siam Miyaki, a Thai spot.

Hiking and cycling on the Custis Trail
Residents live within half a mile of Thrifton Hill Park on the eastern edge of Maywood. The park is hardly more than a strip of woods, but it contains a portion of the Custis Trail. The paved path traverses a hilly section of Arlington. Cyclists sometimes use the 4-mile trail as a link between the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Trail and Washington, D.C. Thrifton Hill Park doesn’t offer any other amenities, but it buffers the neighborhood from Interstate 66. Maywood Mini Park sits amid the houses, offering a playground for younger residents.

Maywood Fourth of July parade
The neighborhood celebrates Fourth of July with a parade of residents with decorated bicycles, scooters and even strollers. Locals are less than a mile from the Cherrydale Farmers Market, a Saturday morning event where more than 15 vendors sell locally raised pork, gourmet popcorn and other items. Shoppers can even pre-order online and pick up their purchases on Saturday.
Spout Run Parkway, I-66 lead to D.C.
Maywood is surrounded by major roadways; Langston Boulevard runs throughout the north side of the county, while Spout Run Parkway leads to Washington, D.C. Interstate 66 also connects to the district, but it’s a toll road. The neighborhood is only 5 miles from the heart of the district, though the drive may take 40 minutes when traffic is heavy. Commuters who want to take the train can head to the Clarendon Metro station, which is slightly more than a mile outside Maywood. However, the station doesn’t have any parking spaces.
