About Arvin, CA

About Arvin, CA

Agricultural city near Tehachapi

At the base of the Tehachapi Mountain range, residents in Arvin enjoy mountain vistas from three different directions. And the cost of living in this city 20 miles southeast of Bakersfield is more than 55% lower than the state average. Big names like Grimmway carrots, Gold Ribbon potatoes and Di Giorgio grapes originate in Arvin, which help to maintain the area’s agricultural- and industrial-based economy. “You pass field after field as you drive through the area. And when the orchards bloom, especially the almond orchards, Arvin transforms into a picturesque small town,” says Jose Torres, a Realtor at RE/MAX Golden Empire with 5 years of experience in the area. While it’s the nation’s leading distributor of fresh produce, the pesticides from these farm fields—as well as the downwind location from a large oil refinery—pollution in Arvin is among the highest in the country.

Bungalows and Paradise Lakes Estates

Sidewalks line Arvin’s residential streets, where street parking is common. Many homes are fenced in from the front yard to the back yard. Ranch homes and bungalows, some with attached garages and driveways, range in size from 1,000 to 1,400 square feet and in price from about $210,000 to $320,000. Arvin is also home to Paradise Lakes Estates, a gated community on two man-made lakes with 20 properties. There, 2,100-square-foot postmodern ranch-style houses sell for around $675,000.

Wildflower Festival at Smothermon Park

At DiGiorgio Park, there are athletic fields, basketball courts and a skatepark. A couple blocks to the south, Smothermon Park offers a playground and more athletic fields. The Arvin Wildflower Festival is held at this park every April, bringing the community together with rides, food and drink vendors, and live music. “Arvin is also close to the Tehachapi Mountains, where people go to hike and even ski when the mountain gets snow,” Torres adds.

Local Mexican cuisine and takeout

Many of the city's restaurants and storefronts can be found along Bear Mountain Boulevard. Residents pick up fresh meat at Carniceria Martinez Harris Ranch and the rest of their grocery list at Vallarta Supermarket. Burger Time is a hamburger-and-fry takeout and drive-thru spot, and New Jarritos serves authentic Mexican cuisine. El Chavalon Sushi & Mariscos puts a Mexican twist on sushi, and next door, locals grab pizza and wings at Bear Mt Pizza. “Not too far away is the Tejon Outlets, where they have plans to build a Hard Rock Casino,” Torres says.

Bear Mountain Boulevard convenience

Bear Mountain Boulevard is a four-lane highway that runs across the northern part of Arvin. Several Kern Transit and Arvin Transit bus stops pepper this road. Bear Mountain Boulevard connects to California State Route 58 to the east and California State Route 99 to the west. “A lot of Arvin residents commute into Bakersfield for work,” says Torres. While it's a quick drive into Bakersfield, many Arvin residents work at one of the area’s several farms and take advantage of the city's green spaces and eateries.
