Warm community “off the beaten path”
Connected to Long Island only by the thin spit of land known as Asharoken, Eatons Neck is surrounded by water on almost all sides. Its location and heavily wooded land make it a peacefully isolated neighborhood with a deeply connected community. “Eatons Neck is a little bit off the beaten path,” says Janet Pushee, a licensed associate broker at Coldwell Banker Real Estate. “There’s a very special sense of community out there unto itself. It takes 20 minutes to get into town, another 20 minutes to get back. Because of that, neighbors help each other out a lot and they’re very connected.” These qualities encourage people to seek out houses here. “There were only two places I would look for a house for myself when it was time to move, and it was either here or Centerport — that was it,” says Carolyn Horner, a licensed real estate salesperson at Signature Premier Properties who has lived in Eatons Neck since 2020. “I know the neighborhoods really well, and I just love it out here.”

Hobart Beach, jumping into The Sluice
Stretching a long finger off Eatons Neck’s edge, Hobart Beach Park is a prime spot for swimming, boating, laying out on the sand or bringing kids to play. “It’s one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset here on the North Shore,” says Sari Eidelkind, a licensed real estate salesperson at Lucky to Live Here Realty who grew up in nearby Huntington and has been selling homes here for about 10 years. Activities like fishing and clamming are popular, and according to Horner, most people have a sailboat, motorboat, kayak or paddleboard. But the beaches aren’t the only spots to enjoy the water. “The Sluice is a free-flowing body of water that’s kind of blocked a bit by this little walking bridge,” Horner says. “On high tide, people love to jump in on the shallow side, and as the tide is going out, it shoots you through the opening and creates a little whirlpool on the other side. Then it goes from a little whirlpool into a lazy river and then out into the harbor. It’s so neat!”
Wildlife thrives here, too. There are many species of birds, from owls and blue herons to eagles, but there are also deer, foxes and a few varieties of harmless snakes. “And rumor has it — I haven’t seen it yet — we have an otter,” Horner says. “Even the fireflies are different here. We have this big, flat piece of property that leads to the water, and when it’s firefly season, it’s like a carpet. It makes you feel like a little kid, and everything is possible.”

Storms can impact life in Eatons Neck
Storms can cut Eatons Neck off from Long Island by flooding the only road in or blocking it with debris, preventing people from entering or leaving. Horner says that in her four years of living here, the longest the neighborhood has been cut off from the mainland has been about six hours. “It’s kind of a snow day in the middle of the summer,” Horner says. “Everybody out here knows that’s a possibility, so you get to know your neighbors and if anyone needs anything, they’re there for each other.” Storms also used to knock the entire neighborhood’s power out regularly, but a recently completed project to bury the power lines has cut down on this significantly.
Fixer-uppers starting at $500,000
Once made up of a few Gold Coast estates, Eatons Neck has hints of history scattered through the trees and among its colonials, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes. It’s also not too rare to see mid-century modern homes or houses with cedar shake siding. Today, Eatons Neck is split into two distinct areas. The first is “the 2-acre zone,” where homes are set back from the street on at least 2 acres of often wooded land, giving it an even more rural feel. “In June, when everything starts to bloom, the smell of the honeysuckle is just unbelievable,” Horner says. “It’s all so wild-looking. It’s beautiful.” At the end of the peninsula, the second area’s lots typically max out at about half an acre. Individual neighborhoods in this area offer access to smaller private beaches.
Fixer-uppers on less land start out in the $500,000 range, while a large, updated waterfront home typically maxes out around $3 million. Old homes with unchanged footprints, Horner says, often have lower taxes. “There’s a lot of houses out here that haven’t been fully renovated yet, so you can get kind of a deal on them and then renovate them yourselves,” Horner says, adding that’s exactly what she did with her own home.

A unique Fourth of July celebration
The sense of community here is added to by regular events, including an incredibly popular Fourth of July Parade. “The fun thing is, there’s a duck that starts the parade every year,” Horner says. “They dress the duck in a hat or scarf, something in red, white and blue, and the people who own the duck walk along with him and when he gets tired, they pick him up, and then they put him down and he waddles his way through town. And all the kids gather on one side of the street with their water guns, and as the firemen come through, the kids shoot the water guns at the firemen and the firemen open up their hoses and blast the kids and throw candy. It’s so much fun!” The parade is followed up by a ceremony and a free cookout. Plenty of groups meet throughout the year, too, including a knitting group, yacht club, a homemakers group and a group of women who meet up on the beach once a week at sunset to talk and drink wine.
Driving to shopping and dining in Northport
Residents face a bit of a drive when they need to shop for essentials or want a fun night out, but braving it reveals plenty to do in Northport about 15 minutes away. “It really is a spectacular lifestyle with the restaurants and the shopping as well as we have the John Engeman Theater for off-Broadway shows,” Eidelkind says. Huntington, which is about 30 minutes away, offers even more entertainment, including music performances at the Paramount Theater. Stop & Shop provides groceries 7 miles — an 18-minute drive — from home.

LIRR’s Northport and Huntington stations
It’s a trek to the nearest highway, which is State Route 25A about 7 miles away. The Long Island Rail Road has a station in Northport, which connects to a bigger line at Huntington Station that goes directly to New York City. “From New York City to Huntington, that’s a direct one-hour train ride, and then for those in Northport you would transfer in Huntington to go to Northport,” Eidelkind says. “But it’s less than 10 minutes driving, so some people would rather drive that than get on another train.”
