Golf course neighborhood in southern Ashland
In Oak Knoll, contemporary and traditional homes surround the neighborhood’s namesake municipal golf course near the edge of southern Ashland. Residents here have quick access to Interstate 5 and Green Springs Highway 66, which border either side of the neighborhood. On the course, golfers can take in scenic views of the Rogue Valley countryside, encompassing the rolling Siskiyou and Cascade mountain ranges. The towering California Black Oak trees throughout the area inspired the neighborhood’s name and golf course. There are also several neighborhood hotels and restaurants in Oak Knoll, including El Paraiso and Caldera Brewing Company. According to Justin Donovan, an Ashland resident and broker with Ashland Homes Real Estate Inc., several popular vineyards are located directly east of Oak Knoll, including Irvine & Roberts, a winery and tasting room with “an incredible setting.” Students in this neighborhood are zoned for the Ashland School District, which receives an overall A-minus rating from Niche.

Oak Knoll Golf Course is open year-round
The Oak Knoll Golf Course was established in 1927 and is the only municipal golf course in Southern Oregon. The 9-hole course is open year-round and offers annual membership options, which start at around $1,100 per individual. Members can also access Oak Knoll’s covered driving range and practice areas. The course’s clubhouse, which offers drink service, is open to the public and doesn’t require a membership. One mile outside the neighborhood is the Ashland Family YMCA, where locals can sign up for fitness classes or enroll their kids in youth clubs, preschool or afterschool programs. The Y also has an indoor aquatic center where children can take swimming lessons.

Contemporary Craftsman and traditional-style homes
A mix of contemporary Craftsman and traditional-style single-family homes line Oak Knoll’s hilly cul-de-sacs and tree-lined streets. Many homes are ranch-style dwellings or residences with rambling compositions and eye-catching architectural features, like bay windows and hipped terracotta roofs. “There’s a very eclectic assortment of homes being offered,” Donovan says. Homes are often shrouded by front lawn foliage, such as mature oak trees, trimmed hedges and drought-tolerant plants like California poppies, artemisia and catmint. Most properties have paved driveways and attached garages, but residents can also park their cars on the street. Mid- to late 20th-century single-family homes range from about $425,000 to $650,000, while modern homes built during the early 2000s typically cost between $600,000 and $850,000. “Ashland has its own water supply system and sewer treatment plant; this has helped keep the development opportunities down and, in turn, home prices up due to basic supply and demand economics,” Donovan says.
Students zoned for Ashland School District
Kindergarten through fifth-grade students can attend Bellview Elementary School, while older students head to Ashland Middle and Ashland High School. All three schools receive A-minus ratings from Niche. Also within the Ashland School District is TRAILS Outdoor School, which operates on a lottery-based admissions process and serves kindergarten through eighth grade. TRAILS students learn curriculum focused on nature and the arts, and teachers regularly bring their classrooms outside to get hands-on experience with the environment.

For a morning caffeine boost, residents can stop by the Little Espresso Shop, a walkup wooden coffee stand. Down the street is El Paraiso, a popular regional chain specializing in Mexican fare where diners order house favorites like carne asada and fajitas. Lastly, residents can head to the Caldera Brewery & Restaurant to enjoy craft brews and local eats in an outdoor seating area with unobstructed views of the Rogue Valley mountains. For grocery shopping, Albertsons supermarket is 1 mile away in the Tolman Creek Plaza.

Access to Interstate 5 and Green Springs Highway 66
With hilly roads and a lack of public transit options, Oak Knoll is a heavily car-dependent neighborhood. Commuters have convenient access to Interstate 5, a major west coast thoroughfare, and Green Springs Highway 66, which travels east towards Klamath Falls. Because of the proximity to these highways, parts of the neighborhood have moderately elevated noise levels. The Ashland Municipal Airport is adjacent to Oak Knoll but doesn’t cause noise. Nineteen miles north is the Rogue Valley International Medford Airport, which offers over a dozen direct domestic flights and a handful of international flights to Canada and Mexico.
Theatre performances in downtown Ashland
Between late spring and early winter, people can catch award-winning performing arts shows at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival theatre venue in downtown Ashland, just under 4 miles away. Donovan says that during the summer, many Ashland residents head to the town of Jacksonville, roughly 45 minutes away, for live music concerts at the Britt Festival, which he calls a “great outdoor venue under the Ponderosa Pines.”
