Established Wilkes-Barre suburb with a strong historical identity
Though a quiet slice of northeastern Pennsylvania, the borough of Ashley effervesces with a strong sense of community anchored by deep industrial roots minutes from Wilkes-Barre. “Ashley is a former coal mining town, and the community is very loyal to the process of maintaining that history,” says local Realtor Elbros Samkough of Century 21 Signature Properties, who has worked in the Wilkes-Barre area since 2017. He adds that even though it’s part of Hanover Township, the borough maintains a distinct identity: “Ashley residents tend to view themselves as their own separate entity, and there’s a lot of pride around it.”
Ashley is a suburb of Wilkes-Barre consisting of approximately 3,000 residents.
Ashley was first settled in 1830 and was a productive coal mining town into the 20th century.

Historic sites turn into recreational parks
Miners Memorial Park lies next to the Ashley Huber Breaker Historical Site, a 3-acre abandoned mine land property that was once Ashley's booming industrial center. The refinery was demolished in 2014, but the borough has plans to expand the memorial park and raise public awareness about the site’s importance. Samkough says the community is rallying behind the park plans, which include adding walking trails and benches and setting up educational kiosks about the area’s anthracite history.
Public parks like Nicholson Street Park and Hanover Township Municipal Park provide open spaces and playgrounds for free play and fun. Baseball games are held at the fields of Bobby Strish Memorial Park, which also has basketball courts and an additional playground. Nature lovers can hop on the nearby Luzerne County Levee Trail, which snakes 12 miles along the Susquehanna River.
Ashley includes a beautiful memorial to the town's coal mining heritage.

Local bazaars create local buzz
The Ashley community gathers at various bazaars every year, such as the Fireman’s Bazaar and the St. Leo’s Holy Rosary Church Bazaar. The typically weekend-long fairs feature local food and artisan vendors, games for kids and live entertainment. Money raised benefits the local fire department and the catholic church, respectively. “There’s been an effort in reviving the events over the last few years,” Samkough says, adding that community involvement for the bazaars has grown as these efforts actualize. In Wilkes-Barre, local houses of worship across various denominations, including synagogues and masjids, host additional community events. Wilkes-Barre is also home to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, which hosts sporting events and concerts.
Homes from the area’s coal mining days
Mature trees shade the sidewalks that frame Ashley’s grid-style streets, lined with humble workers’ cottages and foursquare homes from the coal mining era. Some feature different-colored vinyl siding, while others showcase gambrel roofing that reflects Dutch Colonial influences. A few Italianate and Victorian-inspired houses, twin townhouses, and bi-level ranch styles are also found peppered throughout the neighborhood. Single-family houses here typically range between $90,000 and $210,000, depending on square footage and age. Manufactured homes in the mobile home community off Hazelton Street may list from $36,000 to $48,000. “Values of the homes have gone up, especially since the pandemic,” Samkough says. He adds that Ashely’s quiet, sleepy streets offer a sense of safety. The borough receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Plans to combine schools in the Hanover Area School District
Ashley is served by the Hanover Area School District, which comprises six schools across the county. Hanover Green Elementary School, which earns a B-minus overall Niche score, serves kindergarten and first grade. Second and third graders attend C-rated Lee Park Elementary School before advancing to C-minus-rated Hanover Area Memorial Elementary School for fourth through sixth grades. Lastly, students finish their education at Hanover Area Junior-Senior High School. In early 2024, the school district announced plans to combine all the elementary schools into one building instead of renovating the historic, current buildings. This is in response to the enrollment surge in the last two years.
Hanover Area Junior-Senior High School serves 930 students in grades 7-12.
