Rural scenery surrounds this gated community
Located among the foothills of the Sawatch Range, Aspen’s Starwood neighborhood is far removed from the bustle of the city’s downtown. This exurban, planned community immerses its residents in nature, with snowcapped mountains and rolling hills dominating the skyline. This collage of natural scenery even inspired Starwood resident John Denver to write a paean to this neighborhood, “Starwood in Aspen,” in 1971. Realtor Riley Warwick with brokerage Douglas Elliman says, “It’s a bit removed from town. It’s a little bit private; there’s a 24-hour security gate. It’s known for its gorgeous views and its expansive properties.”

A bar and baked goods are right around the corner from home
Though Starwood may be far from downtown Aspen’s supermarkets and eateries, nearby State Route 82 puts a smaller shopping scene at this neighborhood’s doorstep. Roxy’s Market and Deli serves as the local grocer, featuring an inventory comparable to a brand-name supermarket. Steeps not only offers a sports bar atmosphere and grill classics, but the restaurant doubles as a takeout venue. Both the Louis Swiss Bakery and the French Pastry Cafe serve up fresh-made Viennoiseries and hot drinks.

Palatial homes with mountain views
Starwood takes its name from a former ranch that, in the 1970s, was transformed into one of Aspen’s first gated communities. This neighborhood retains that rustic feel, its vast residences sitting on large lots with hills, trees and a warren of roads to separate them. Homes with under 5 bedrooms have sold for between $8.4 and $23.9 million, while those with between 6 and 7 bedrooms varied from $29 to $55 million. Not only does nature provide quiet seclusion to each residence, but the community offers 24-hour gated security and even package service at the gate. Neighbors come together for events like Starwood’s speaker series and for hiking down this neighborhood’s new hiking trails, inaugurated in 2019.
