An established suburb in east Athens
Homes in Cedar Creek have roots that date back to the mid-20th century – and many of its residents have been around for a few decades, too. The community started to develop in the 1960s and became a popular neighborhood for families. It’s predominantly residential but still close to several stores, restaurants and downtown Athens, which is a major reason why residents tend to stick around when they buy a house. “People have lived here for 10 to 20 years, some even more,” says Marcelo Buril, a local Realtor with Greater Athens Properties. He’s lived in the city for over 25 years. “It’s more community-oriented with a lot of families.” And familiarity among neighbors is common. “People tend to know each other and their families, so it’s tight-knit.”

Mid-20th century styles with classic red brick
Cedar Creek’s housing was developed between the 1960s and the ’80s. Ranch-style, colonial and split-level homes typically measure over 2,000 square feet with three to four bedrooms. They usually list between $300,000 and $450,000. Single-family homes under 2,000 square feet typically sell between $200,000 and $300,000. The community features a few townhome options on Barrington Drive, where two bedrooms list between $125,000 and $200,000. Most houses have traditional red-brick facades with colorful shutters adorning front-facing windows. Several ranch-style homes have long porches where homeowners place rocking chairs. The lots are spacious but close to neighbors – typically around a half-acre. Pine trees dominate Cedar Creek, and fallen needles and cones tend to scatter across front and backyards. Many trees scale a few dozen feet above the houses, so the streets stay shaded. “People drive slow here because there’s no sidewalk,” Buril says. “But they’re still out walking their dogs.”
