A local historic district home to UGA's Greek life
The Milledge Avenue Historic District has some of the most diverse architecture in Athens. Mid-to-late 19th-century homes line the community's main strip, from Queen Anne and Classical Revival to Italianate and Tudor Revival styles. Today, the community is dominated by the University of Georgia's Greek life. Over the years, fraternities and sororities have bought these large houses and repurposed them for students. Students commonly walk to school, go on runs or throw around a football in the front yard. "We like to go on 'Milly Walks' here, which are just walks down Milledge," says Elyse Robbins, a UGA student and Alpha Chi Omega sorority member. "It's an active place, and running is big." While it's a popular neighborhood for students, it doubles as a Local Historic District – certified and protected by the Historic Preservation Commission. Its distinction as a Historic District ensures the community's historic homes are preserved.

Eye-catching, historic homes line Milledge Avenue
The houses on Milledge Avenue date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of these historic homes have the characteristic colonnades and wide front porches of Greek Revival homes or the thick white columns and evenly spaced windows typical in Neoclassical homes. Styles vary from house to house, but they often have one thing in common – a collection of Greek letters displayed along its front siding. Fraternities and sororities usually snag the houses that are directly on Milledge. These homes typically list between $900,000 and $3 million. Houses on streets that branch off Milledge Avenue sell at lower prices. These include historic craftsman bungalows or mid-20th-century ranch-style homes that measure between 1,500 and 2,500 square feet. These typically list between $400,000 and $750,000.
