Calm and convenience blend in Baker Hills

Baker Hills offers a quiet setting without being too far from Atlanta's action. Thanks to nearby Interstates 285 and 20, the commute downtown and to other major business districts is fairly manageable. Six Flags Over Georgia and several shopping centers are also just a quick drive away. This convenient location, combined with older homes that are comparatively more affordable than the city’s median, makes Baker Hills a popular choice for investors and first-time buyers.

House styles and prices

Ranch-style, bi-level and split-level houses from the mid-20th century dot Baker Hills’ winding roads. The median sale price is around $230,000, which is well below Atlanta's median of about $425,000 but similar to nearby neighborhoods like Collier Heights and Carroll Heights. These lower prices are mostly a result of the age and condition of the homes in the area. “Fixer-uppers are the norm on the Westside of Atlanta,” says Rachel Ehlinger, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Atlanta North who has sold several homes in this part of the city. “People don’t really move over here unless they’re willing to renovate.” Houses that need some work can start in the mid-$100,000s, while homes with updates can reach the lower $300,000s.

Commute times from Baker Hills

Baker Hills is less than 2 miles from Interstates 285 and 20. Easy access to these highways helps you get to:

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in 15 to 20 minutes
  • Downtown Atlanta in 20 to 30 minutes
  • Midtown Atlanta in 30 to 40 minutes
  • Buckhead in 30 minutes to an hour
Commute times can sometimes be longer, depending on traffic. “The closer you are to those highways, the better,” Ehlinger says. “Rush hour traffic is already bad enough most days, so getting to those highways quickly is always a plus.”

Places to get outside

Wilson Mill Park sits on Baker Hills’ east side with a playground, a baseball field and tennis courts. Just 4 miles west, Six Flags Over Georgia has more than 45 rides, ranging from the 200-foot-tall Goliath rollercoaster to the funnel-shaped Tsunami Surge waterslide. The park is open all summer and draws crowds for fall events like Fright Fest, which can make traffic in the area a bit heavier. “I-20 leads straight to it, so you’ll definitely notice more congestion right when the park opens or whenever there’s something special happening,” Ehlinger says.

Where to go out to eat and shop

Baker Hills is almost entirely residential, but the nearby Adamsville neighborhood has some convenience stores and a handful of casual places to eat. Memezz Restaurant is a no-frills diner serving breakfast staples and soul food classics, while Ameen Fish & Wings is a drive-through known for its fried catfish. Other commercial hubs within 10 miles include:

  • West Ridge Shopping Center, home to a Wayfield Supermarket, an O’Reilly Auto Parts and a Hibbett
  • Cascade Crossing, which has a Publix and is surrounded by chain fast-food restaurants like Chick-fil-A and Starbucks
  • Greenbriar Mall, where you’ll find a Foot Locker, along with locally owned clothing stores
