A mix of old and new on the Atlanta BeltLine
Most of Chosewood Park was built between the 1920s and 1940s when architect C.L. Chosewood built houses for the workforce at the Lakewood Assembly Plant operated by General Motors. Although the GM plant is now gone, this tight-knit community on the Atlanta BeltLine and next to Grant Park remains and continues to grow. “A lot is happening. We have a lot of new construction coming into the neighborhood. More people are moving here. But it still stands that it’s a tight-knit community,” says Shana Arnold, a neighborhood resident and Realtor with Adams Realtors. “I know all of my neighbors. If we ever have any problems, there’s a chain of phone calls to keep an eye out.”

Upgraded parks coming to the neighborhood
“There are some benefits to the extra people. We are finally getting some things done in our park which are past due, like playground and trail maintenance, as a result of the new developments,” Arnold says. Chosewood Park, a 15-acre green space bearing the same name as the neighborhood, is a popular recreation spot along the BeltLine with walking trails, a playground, baseball fields and edible fruit trees scattered throughout. Residents can use the famous Atlanta BeltLine as the neighborhood is on the Southside Trail, one of the unpaved parts of the walkway that encircles metro Atlanta. The path’s unpaved portions are currently undergoing construction and are expected to be completed by Spring 2025. Boulevard Crossing Park, currently a small open green space with two soccer fields, is also about to undergo redevelopment to include a skate park, event lawn and boardwalk.

Neighborhood events and Grant Farmers Market
The Chosewood Park Neighborhood Association helps garner community involvement and organizes community events. “Last year in the fall we did something called ‘Chosewoodstock’ for the first time. It was like a progressive porch party. I hosted at my house and was responsible for refreshments. It's the kind of neighborhood where everyone hosts, and everyone who was interested was able to come,” Arnold says. “We’ll have another one this year. It was free last year, but we’d like to make it some sort of benefit and send some money towards the park.” Immediately north of Chosewood Park, residents can visit the Grant Park Farmers Market every Sunday at Beacon ATL/Eventide Brewing. For more weekend fun, families can visit Zoo Atlanta, just 1.5 miles north of Chosewood Park, or Georgia Aquarium, just 5.5 miles north.
You can try a variety of cold and hot drinks at Grant Street Farmers Market.
The Grant Street Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 9AM to 1PM.

Developments and dining at Hudson & Alphonse and Red’s Beer Garden
Locals of Chosewood can visit Hudson & Alphonse for piled-high sandwiches, or Red’s Beer Garden to enjoy a hot dog and a cold drink. Many Chosewood residents do their grocery shopping at the Publix in Summerhill, about 2 miles north of Chosewood. However, the former site of the defunct GM factory on McDonough Boulevard that long stood vacant is undergoing redevelopment. “They demolished the GM plant, and we’re getting a 40-acre mixed-use development,” Arnold says. The development will have 2000 homes and offer the neighborhood’s first grocery store within close walking distance. “In the past, we didn’t have our own grocery store. We would love to have a nice salad or juice restaurant to get something within walking distance, or pick up basics like milk, fruit, whatever,” Arnold says.

Older bungalows and newly built townhomes
Most of the homes in Chosewood Park were built between the 1920s and 1940s, and an increasing number of these homes are being renovated. These Craftsman-style bungalow homes sit on narrow lots with little space between neighborhoods and cost around $400,000. However, the largest portion of homes coming on the market in Chosewood are newly built townhouses and condos with modern and Craftsman-inspired design elements costing between $400,000 and $550,000. The introduction of the Atlanta BeltLine has sparked new development in the neighborhood. There have, however, been some concerns regarding displacement for long-term residents in Chosewood Park as some older, more affordable apartment buildings have been demolished and replaced with new construction.

Driving, walking and E-biking around Chosewood Park
Chosewood Park is about 3 miles southeast of Downtown Atlanta and less than 2 miles east of Interstate 85. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is also less than 9 miles southwest of Chosewood Park. “Chosewood Park is extremely walkable, and you can walk to restaurants on the weekends,” Arnold says. And with the new developments and upgrades happening in the neighborhood, some residents may choose to forgo cars altogether. “We see a lot of electric bikes. We’re seeing them more and more.”

United Stations Penitentiary Atlanta in the neighborhood
The first wave of residents to the area happened in 1902 when the United States Penitentiary Atlanta opened, and its workforce needed a place to live. While the prison is still active, it is a low-security federal prison. “It doesn’t really impact life for the people that understand,” Arnold says. “It is what it is. About 10-15 years ago, it may have been a deterrence to the neighborhood. Now it’s just the fact it is there.”
