English Avenue sees revitalization while hanging on to original charm
The Westside Atlanta neighborhood of English Avenue is a mix of preserving the old and embracing the new. “The neighborhood has the original character,” says Tonya M. Williams, zoning representative for the city’s Neighborhood Planning Unit that represents the community. Though some neighborhoods lose their identity as new construction and revitalization comes in, Williams says design control rules ensured that even new and renovated homes in English Avenue were done in the same style as the rest of the neighborhood. Craftsman-style homes line the narrow residential streets in the community, which has become more walkable in recent years with the construction of the Westside Beltline Connector, a section of the trail that connects English Avenue with other neighborhoods and parks throughout the city.

Renovated bungalows and new townhomes to meet demand
Bungalows under 1,000 square feet usually list around $200,000, while larger single-family homes list up to $450,000. Newly built condos and townhomes along the edges of the neighborhood sell for upward of $500,000. Several plots of land are also available in the neighborhood for about $100,000, for those who prefer to build from scratch. George Baily, a real estate agent who worked with Brock Built Homes for several years selling townhomes in the neighborhood, attributes much of the growth to the Beltline. The beltline is an Atlanta project that reclaimed an old railway corridor and made it into a 20-plus mile walking trail circling the city. “It just turned these small sections of town that were older areas, they became vibrant hubs,” he says. “Obviously housing followed and the people followed.”

Westside Park, the Georgia Aquarium and other recreation options
English Avenue is close to Westside Park, the city’s largest greenspace. It has a reservoir, trails, playgrounds and pavilions. Rodney Cook Sr. Park is just across the street in Vine City and features a splash pad, playground and sculptures. The neighborhood is also near the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the Georgia Aquarium. “Proximity-wise, you can walk everywhere,” Williams says. Child and teen programming is also available within the neighborhood at the Bellwood Boys and Girls Club and the @Promise Center, an initiative by Atlanta Police that seeks to reduce crime by diverting teenagers to athletics and other events and activities.
Residents can head to the nearby Georgia Aquarium for family fun exploring sea animals.

Students zoned for two Atlanta Public Schools sites
Students in English Avenue are zoned for Hollis Innovation Academy, a K-8 school that has a C ranking on Niche. They then move to the C-rated Booker T. Washington High School. Williams says Hollis Innovation is working to reopen its indoor natatorium. “That’s going to be a great feature for all of the kids that attend that school and live in the neighborhood,” she says.

Plenty of dining options, including the popular Westside Motor Lounge

To the northwest of the neighborhood are multiple shopping areas featuring a mix of retail stores and restaurants. Multiple small neighborhood grocers are located in English Avenue. Vine City has a Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Restored St. Mark church hosts events
In the heart of English Avenue sits one of its historic markers, St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal. The church’s stone shell sat abandoned for many years before it was restored into a cultural center for the community. Today, it hosts art exhibits and summertime symphonies. Across the street, a now-empty space that locals refer to as “the yellow store” is being converted into a cafe and bakery.
