An educational foundation in Margaret Mitchell
Though it was developed in the 1950s as Cherokee Forest, this neighborhood of large homes on large lots soon took on the name of the local elementary school, Margaret Mitchell, which took its name from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Gone With the Wind." Today, education continues to define life in the Margaret Mitchell neighborhood, with a mix of both public and private schools earning A grades on Niche. “Our neighborhood is in close proximity to several top-tier private schools," Keller Williams Realtor Rachel Farren says. "Families have access to a range of esteemed educational options." With luxurious homes, hiking trails and local events organized by the neighborhood civic association, Margaret Mitchell continues to care for the families who live there.
Modern homes and McMansions in the neighborhood
Homes old and new in Margaret Mitchell sit on large lots full of trees and verdant landscaping. Architectural styles range from older ranch-style homes to newer McMansions with multiple stories and backyard pools. “Homes sell pretty fast,” Farren says. “The community boasts a blend of luxurious, high-end residences alongside more affordable housing options." Many of the traditional homes alongside Margaret Mitchell Drive to the north list between $400,000 and $600,000, while Midcentury Modern homes that sit by Moores Mill Road in the south can list between $800,000 to $1 million. Larger modern and contemporary homes by West Wesley Road run upwards of $2 million, while some custom houses in the neighborhood can be as high as $4 million.
Westminister and Atlanta public schools
In addition to the local elementary school, Margaret Mitchell also has a private Christian school in Westminister Schools, which sits on a 180-acre wooded campus to the north and has an A-plus on Niche. While no longer known as Margaret Mitchell Elementary, Morris Brandon Elementary is a National Blue Ribbon School and has an A-minus on Niche. The public educational pathway continues at Sutton Middle School, which has a B-plus on Niche, and ends at North Atlanta High School, which has an A and is notable for its art programs.
Connectivity between local trails and creeks
The Paul Koshewa Trail is a nearly 2-mile trail that loops around the Westminster campus and provides easy access to the 16-mile-long Nancy Creek. Westminster students and faculty also enjoy several outdoor sports facilities, including soccer fields, baseball and softball diamonds and a football stadium. Standing Peachtree Park offers more green spaces and hiking trails and is directly next to the Peachtree Creek and the Chattahoochee River.
A Publix presence in two shopping centers
Margaret Mitchell has two shopping centers at the north and south ends of the neighborhood. Moores Mill Center features a handful of Mexican restaurants and cafes, while West Paces Ferry has chains such as McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A and Starbucks. Both shopping centers have a Publix Super Market and a CVS Pharmacy.
Limited bus stops with railway connections
Interstate 75 runs along the eastern side of the neighborhood, offering direct access into downtown Atlanta to the south or north into Cobb County, home of the Atlanta Braves. While there aren’t any bus stops in the neighborhood, there are bus stops at Howell Mill Road across the highway that take residents to Midtown Station and the local middle and high school. Red and gold line connections also connect residents to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is 11 miles south. The closest 24-hour emergency care is 5 miles southeast at the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital.
Environmental factors
The CAP Index crime score is 2 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4. Peachtree Creek and Nancy Creek are both at the highest risk of flooding, with water levels sometimes exceeding 3 feet. The southwestern portion of the neighborhood is in an ember zone due to being so close to the park, while homes located alongside I-75 do get noise from the traffic.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
