Parker is a suburban neighborhood close to Downtown Atlanta and Decatur
Parker, a suburban community, carries a lot of convenience. It sits near Interstate 20, and though it is an Atlanta neighborhood, it is closer to Decatur’s shopping and dining options than to Downtown Atlanta. Several green spaces are also close by. For some, the neighborhood can be seen as a bargain. “People can find something cost-effective here while still being five minutes from a lot of things,” says Casey Dellinger, a Realtor with Bolst Inc.
Ranch-style houses, townhomes and farmhouses for relatively low prices
Ranch-style homes often range from $200,000 to $415,000. Recently built townhomes, mostly found in cul-de-sacs off Flat Shoals Road, can go from $210,000 to $350,000. Larger farmhouses and Craftsman-style homes can sell for between $430,000 and $700,000. “You can save between $250,000 and $500,000 here compared with the city of Decatur,” Dellinger says. “And it’s still a short drive or bike ride away.” Roads are surrounded by tall oak and pine trees. Front lawns often feature bushes or smaller trees.
Access to two cities and MARTA public transportation
Interstate 20 runs south of the neighborhood. It can take drivers into Downtown Atlanta, which is just over 5 miles west. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is around 15 miles away. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, known as MARTA, operates buses that make several stops along Flat Shoals Road at the community’s southern end. Though the community can experience tornadoes and hurricanes, storms are not much of a concern for residents. “The area gets the tail end of severe weather that starts in Texas or Louisiana,” Dellinger says. “It’s usually pretty subdued by that time.”
Ronald E. McNair Discover Learning Center lets students learn from their community
Students are served by DeKalb County Schools. They can attend Ronald E. McNair Discover Learning Academy, an elementary school that holds a C-minus Niche grade. The school often brings in “McNair Subject Matter Experts,” or renowned members of the community, to speak to classes and spark discussions. McNair Middle School also has a C-minus score, while McNair High School earns a D-plus.
An Atlanta Hawks-branded basketball court and other athletic facilities are close
N.H. Scott Recreation Center has a basketball court designed with Atlanta Hawks branding and colors, plus tennis courts, a gym and multipurpose fields. The park has received will soon renovate its pool and bathhouse, which have been closed for more than 15 years. Longdale Park has a basketball court, an open field and a playground. There are also walking trails through the woods behind the park. Nearby Barker Bryant Memorial Park is centered around a lake filled with fish and frequented by geese. Gresham Library has a computer lab and hosts events like Board Game Day and the Gresham Book Club.
Shopping at the Edgewood Retail District and dining in The Square, plus other local restaurants
The neighborhood is about 5 miles from the Edgewood Retail District, which has name-brand stores, as well as The Square district of Decatur, which has several well-liked local restaurants. At the southern end of the area is a Walmart Supercenter with a Subway inside it. Across the street is American Deli, a regional chain serving a mix of sandwiches and salads. A bit farther south, RC’s Kitchen is a counter-service eatery with wings, burgers and plenty of sides. To the east, Gutbusters Breakfast serves hearty American classics. A few miles away, Silk at Candler is an upscale restaurant that also hosts events like line dancing classes.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
