Historic downtown Atlanta neighborhood key to the Civil Rights movement
The life story of legendary Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. can be traced along the streets of Sweet Auburn. Dr. King was born, started his pastoral career and is buried in the historic downtown Atlanta neighborhood that played a vital role in the Civil Rights movement in the city and the entire country.
While Dr. King may have been the neighborhood’s most famous resident, the community was the site of many black businesses during the height of the Jim Crow laws and segregation in Atlanta. It was home to the first successful African American daily newspaper, the “Atlanta Daily World,” Atlanta Life Insurance, and the Butler Street YMCA, known as Black City Hall. The neighborhood was home to multiple places of worship, including Prince Hall Masonic Temple, Wheat Street Baptist Church, Big Bethel A.M.E. Church and Ebenezer Baptist Church. “The neighborhood had an impact not only on Atlanta but on the world because of its Civil Rights history,” says Renee Giles, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties.

Historic bungalows among new townhouses and condos
There is a small section of Sweet Auburn where a few remaining Craftsman-style bungalows date back to the 1920s. More recently, the original home inventory has been torn down and replaced with brick townhouses and condo towers. Prices for an attached property range from around $290,000 to $550,000, while a single-family property will sell for around $390,000 and increase. “The market in Sweet Auburn is moving slow, but aside from anything north of Midtown, that is a theme in the housing market since rates went up,” says Celine Higgins Evans, a broker with Simply List, who was born and raised in Atlanta.
Though new housing options are appearing in Sweet Auburn, you can find historic brick cottages.

The longstanding Municipal Market
The Municipal Market, more affectionally known as The Curb Market to locals, has been in its current building since 1924. The open-air market is home to 30 local businesses and features fresh produce, butchers, seafood and a bakery. “Atlanta needs more things like the market that offers fresh produce and is one of the biggest draws to the neighborhood,” Higgins Evans says. Not only is there shopping, but the market features 10 restaurants, including MattChews, an Asian fusion spot, and Metro Deli, which has been a market staple since 2004 and serves soul food. Edgewood Avenue is decorated with colorful murals on numerous restaurants, including Fin & Feathers, with a vast menu and a vibrant atmosphere.
