A mix of rural, residential and industrial space

Home to an impressive bird observatory and the expansive Tesla Gigafactory, Hornsby Bend combines rural, residential and industrial space in the cradle of the Colorado River. “You’ve got Tesla right there, which is bringing a lot of job opportunities,” says Nick Podrebarac, a lifelong Central Texas resident and realtor with All City Real Estate. “There are plenty of new homes, and they’re just going to build more.” Spread across Route 130 just east of downtown Austin, Hornsby Bend is dappled with residential pockets distinct in both style and age. Planned subdivisions are the majority here, with a mix of tall, colorful contemporary homes and cottages made with front-gabled roofs and natural materials.

Bright, modern builds to neutral-toned cottages

Houses in the various subdivisions usually range from $300,000 to $500,000, although a few of the newest homes closer to the city can top out around $850,000. Still, homebuyers often remark that the area is “more affordable than the city, but close enough to still enjoy it,” says Realtor Nick Podrebarac. In the center of the community, the Austins’ Colony neighborhood, the streetscape shuffles between one- and two-story builds, and homes sit quite close together. To the south, the Hornsby Glen area sits right on the river bend with modern homes in bright colors and asymmetrical gables. To the north, the flat-roofed buildings transition to neutral-toned cottages with narrow covered porches.

Breaking ground on expanding education

On the far west side of the community, a small portion of homes are zoned for the Manor Independent School District, but the majority of Hornsby Bend is zoned for the Del Valle Independent School District. Students can attend either Hornsby-Dunlap or Gilbert Elementary, moving on to Dailey Middle — all of which are rated C overall on Niche. There is currently only one public high school, Del Valle High, earning a B-minus; however, in 2023 the district broke ground on a second high school to accommodate the area’s growth due to the Tesla factory.

Avian enthusiasts can visit the Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory

Hornsby Bend’s original claim to fame rests on the wings of rare migratory birds, first discovered in the area in the 1960s. Now, the Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory sits on 1,200 acres of habitat that includes ponds, woodlands and open fields. Hornsby Bend also sits just south of the massive Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park, which includes a lake and boat access, picnic areas and endless trails. Most of the area’s subdivisions include a small park or playground, but larger playscapes can be found on the community’s eastern end at Webberville Park — a popular spot for kayakers to access the river.

Local pizza kitchens and beer gardens

When it’s time for dinner, residents can grab ingredients from one of the local grocers or make the 10-mile trek to H-E-B in the city. For eating out, East Austin Pizza Kitchen is a locally owned community favorite for comfort food. Hyder’s Beer Garden and Food Park is also a popular spot for dancing along to karaoke with a tropical cocktail in one hand and a giant turkey leg in the other. With picnic tables, artificial turf, string lights and neon signs on a bar carved into a shipping container, it feels like a year-round fair.

A 25-minute commute to Downtown Austin

Ample sidewalks make subdivisions extremely walkable, but a car is needed for most shopping and dining, especially considering there is no public transportation. Residents can get to Downtown Austin in about 11 miles or 25 minutes via East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Tesla creating industrial employment

The Tesla Gigafactory has called the area home since 2020 and is one of Austin’s largest industrial facilities, generating about 10,000 jobs.
