Suburban Neighborhood in Austin, Texas
Travis County 78727, 78729
One thing you may notice first about Milwood, a neighborhood located in northwest Austin, is Apple — not the fruit that may or may not fall far from the tree, but the company that designs your MacBook. Apple doesn’t just have one campus in Milwood, but two. It’s easy to imagine that out of the thousands of employees who work on these campuses, many choose to live in Milwood. And since Austin has been slow to upgrade roads and highways to keep pace with its population boom over the past few decades, living so close to work makes a lot of sense.
Milwood is located in Williamson County, or Wilco to locals. It’s a large neighborhood, stretching almost to MoPac Boulevard on the east side and Anderson Mill Road on the west. That’s nearly 4 miles long. So, it’s no surprise that the community has plenty of parks, businesses and schools.
County Judge Bill Gravell says Milwood is no longer a bedroom community outside of metro Austin, especially since Apple has brought so many high-paying jobs to the area. It’s also a family-friendly community, making it very attractive to homebuyers.
Some of the public elementary schools in Milwood include Summitt, which is part of the Austin Independent School District, and Jollyville Elementary in the Round Rock Independent School District. RRISD happens to be the second best school district in Wilco, but Summitt isn’t a shabby school itself. Students there are exposed to foreign languages and world cultures from first through fifth grade.
Rattan Creek Park has a pool with two lap lanes and diving boards, four tennis courts, a basketball court and a beach volleyball court. The Rattan Creek Community Center allows residents to rent space and a kitchen for private parties and events. Riata Neighborhood Park is an 8-acre park just west of the neighborhood and has a half-mile walking path that loops around a lake. At certain times of the year, visitors can catch a glimpse of native wildflowers and migratory waterfowl. There are also tennis courts. While they’re private and for members only, anyone can join the Austin Tennis League.
Yett Creek Neighborhood Park, next to the original Apple campus, is a 40-acre gem of a park with rugged hike and bike trails, as well as abounding opportunities to spot wildlife and birds.
Residents who have a green thumb can head to Adelphi Acre Community Garden, an all-volunteer cooperative of organic gardeners. They’re always looking for volunteers to help with gardening tasks such as weeding and mulching, and special projects, including tending to the butterfly garden and teaching gardening.
Milwood may not have the pizzazz of neighborhoods closer to downtown Austin, but not many neighborhoods really do. This is your typical suburban community, but within reasonable driving distance of one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country and close to businesses that employ a lot of locals and pay well.
