Meandering roads course through the Mt. Bonnell neighborhood landscape.
The highest point in Austin
Mount Bonnell stretches over 700 feet, giving some of the most picturesque views of Lake Austin and the downtown skyline. The historic mountain is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a Texas Historic Landmark. “It’s in northwest hills, which is a really nice place in Austin that has views of downtown and Lake Austin,” says Celina De Luna Lopez, a Realtor with Central Metro Realty who has over 20 years of real estate experience. In the present day, the area below the mountain is home to rows of upscale housing options along the lake, boasting easy convenience to some of the best outdoor amenities in Hill Country and proximity to downtown.
The Mt. Bonnell neighborhood is full of beautiful scenery and landscapes.
Mt. Bonnell and Lake Austin
Hikers often trek the stairs or rough it up the trail to the peak of Mount Bonnell to take in the 360 views of Lake Austin and the city skyline. Residents often enjoy days on the lake as well. Lopez says, “Many homes on the water have boat docks, but there’s also a boat ramp at Lake Austin. People love to go on their boats or fish there.” The community’s location along the Colorado River means residents can take their pick of the many waterfront parks around. Golfers are only 3 miles from Lions Municipal Golf Course, which is noted as the first public golf course to open in Austin.
A variety of architectural styles including Spanish revival and modern can be found here.
Waterfront estates and more housing options
Homes around Mt. Bonnell Road often have direct access to Lake Austin, making them some of the most coveted houses in the area. Houses can cost anywhere from $2 million up to $9 million for homes on several acres of land. Custom estates are common throughout the area, with many roads ending in quiet cul-de-sacs for additional privacy. Some homes have Spanish-style influences with tiled roofing, and there are also some ranches and traditional two-story homes with great views.
Proximity to downtown Austin
Downtown Austin is just 6 miles away and is easily accessible through the Texas 1 Loop. There aren’t many public transit options in the area, so many residents will have to drive to get around. Residents can head down 35th Street for shopping and dining options, and the Ascension Seton Hall Medical Center is also nearby for any medical care.
The Central Market Cafe offers outdoor seating, perfect for getting some work done.
Nearby markets and local eateries
Though the Mount Bonnell area may feel secluded, residents aren’t too far from enjoying many of central Austin’s restaurants and shops. Residents can start their weekend with brunch at Kerbey Lane Cafe or head to Snooze for a Bloody Mary and eggs benedict. Central Market is much more than a grocery store that offers fresh meat, produce and bakery options, as occasionally the outside space is rocking with live music and the sounds of kids having a blast on the playground.
Austin High School, a historic and prestigious public high school in Austin, Texas.
Austin ISD
Kids in the area won’t have to travel far to get to class at Casis Elementary School, which has earned an A grade on Niche. O. Henry Middle School is named after a famed short story writer from the area and offers an array of Fine Arts programs for its students, including theatre, art and dance, among others. A-minus rated O. Henry is followed by A-rated Austin High School, which has a storied 130-year-old history.
