South Lamar is a popular neighborhood for families located in Austin, Texas.
Home to one of the busiest boulevards in the city
Locally known as SoLa, South Lamar isn’t just a trendy spot for shopping, dining and street art; It’s also home to many residents and businesses who have been in the neighborhood for decades. As it’s become a more popular spot for young professionals looking for a laid-back night life scene, the neighborhood has undergone major change. “It’s condos on top and retail on the bottom,” says Mike Lopez, owner of Austin Gift Company on South Lamar Boulevard. “We’re seeing a lot more of that in the South Lamar area.” Residents are within walking distance of all the action. Whether it’s a trip to a Sherlock Holmes-themed pub, vintage clothing shop or one of the oldest dance halls in Texas, South Lamar’s the destination.
The Broken Spoke is an Austin staple for honky tonk.
Live music and local favorites that are unqiuely Austin
Big names in country music — Willie Nelson, The Chicks and Garth Brooks — have all graced the stage of the Broken Spoke. It’s been called the last true honky tonk in Texas and has been featured in television shows like Friday Night Lights and Queer Eye. The dance hall opened in 1964 and was registered as a historical landmark in 2023. Another longstanding Austin favorite is Matt’s El Rancho, serving up Tex-Mex and margaritas since 1952. Austin Gift Company is next to the Target in Lakehills Plaza. “We’re a favorite in town,” says Lopez. “There are people from all over the world in there every day, locals and tourists. It’s the biggest gift and souvenir store in all of Austin.” Also along South Lamar Boulevard is a mix of well-known chains like In-N-Out and upscale restaurants like Loro Austin, where Asian smokehouse meets Texas barbecue.
A changing lanscape for residents
With over 80% of the neighborhood consisting of renters, South Lamar has many condo complexes and apartment buildings. A 1- or 2-bedroom condo will go for around $350,000 to $850,000 while a 3-bedroom house typically won’t sell for under $700,000. There is a lot of new construction happening in the neighborhood because ranch-styles built in the 50s and 60s are being torn down and rebuilt. A new home could sell for as high as $2,000,000, which contributes to the shift in the neighborhood. “Original residents are hanging in as long as they can in South Austin,” Lopez says. “Everyone’s getting price out of there.”
New, modern cottages have been popping up in South Lamar too.

Families enjoy taking the kids to Tom Lasseter Neighborhood Park.
A beloved, peaceful pocket park
Small and out-of-the-way, Tom Lasseter South Lamar Neighborhood Park is loved by locals for being a quiet, shaded place to play with their kids or walk their dogs. Part of the playscape looks like a tree-castle that kids can climb through to get to the slide. A picnic in the pavilion, a game on the basketball court or a stroll on the waking trail are all great ways to spend some time in the park.
Saxon Pub on South Lamar Blvd showcases lots of local musicians.
Discovering new music every night of the week
Austin is known as the Live music capital of the World and South Lamar does the title justice. Restaurants, bars and venues are always hosting performances from artists of all genres. For example, Saxon Pub is branded as a home for music and has multiple bands performing every night.

A neighborhood that easy to navigate
One of South Lamar’s greatest benefits is its walkability. But, for getting outside of the neighborhood, there are several nearby bus stations nearby including one at the Broken Spoke. Travelers can connect to other bus routes at the Westgate Transit Center. Bordered by Ben White Boulevard and South Lamar Boulevard, it’s convenient to get around Travis County and less than 5 minutes to Downtown.

The weather here is generally warm which I enjoy but it does get rather muggy. My biggest complaint is that there are not four real seasons. It's so hot in the summer and then goes straight to as cold as it's gonna get and vice versa. There is no great spring and fall which is sad.
