Wooldridge Square is located in Austin, Texas.
A small square of Downtown Austin
A mix of businesses and residential housing, Wooldridge Square is a roughly four-by-five block that sits diagonal to the Governor’s Mansion, the Capitol Complex and is home to a public square that was part of the city’s original design. “Downtown Austin is very walkable and compact,” says Laura Jorgensen, a Tipster tour director and guide. “It’s easy to navigate as a pedestrian.” There are plenty of sightseeing opportunities while walking through Wooldridge Square Park, including the Texas State Capital, Austin History Center and the Space Cowboy mural. While there isn’t a lot of housing in this neighborhood, it’s possible to find a condo or loft in a historic building.
The Texas State Capitol is visible throughout the Wooldridge Square neighborhood.
Benefits of city life with less traffic and noise
There’s a lot to do in Downtown Austin, day and night. Some residents of Wooldridge Square may be relieved to hear that most of the activity occurs closer to Sixth Street, a few blocks south. So, there are all the benefits of city living, with slightly less noise and traffic. Restaurants and cocktail lounges are on or below Seventh Street, such as Perry’s Steakhouse and Grille. For a more casual happy hour spot, Upstairs at Caroline has giant Jenga, Foosball and corn hole. For groceries, there are two Whole Foods, one on the east side of the city the other on the west side. And there’s a Trader Joe’s on Third Street. All three are less than a mile away and have free parking for shoppers.

High-rise historic lofts with modern amenities
Most residential housing in Wooldridge Square are condos. Though the neighborhood is populated by quaint streets with Colonial-revival style homesteads that were commissioned by some of Austin’s original settlers. Today, most house businesses; and many have been declared historic landmarks. The Brown Building, for example, is a 10-story high-rise that's protected by the National Registry of Historic Places. It has an Art Moderne-style lobby with modern amenities like a fitness center and fob system. A one-bed, one-bath loft will cost around $400,000 while a three-bed, three-bath loft in the same building could go as high as $1,279,500.
Wooldridge Park is the perfect place for a sunny picnic and a breath of fresh air.
Public square that's perfect for picnics
In a grid of gray and beige buildings, the one-acre green block that is Wooldridge Square Park stands out. It was part of the original plans for the city in 1839, but it wasn’t until 1909 that the white classical revival-style gazebo was added. While the spot was once popular with influential speakers like Booker T. Washington to address the public, it is now more commonly used for live music and picnics.
Locals rely on public transport to get in and out of Wooldridge Square.
Getting from point A to point B
The Wooldridge Square neighborhood is bordered by Colorado and Rio Grande streets, east to west; and 11th to Seventh streets, north to south. Due to its grid pattern, people can get around Downtown easily. "To get from point A to point B downtown, most people will walk or ride electric scooters,” says Jorgensen. While there are six bus stops in this neighborhood alone, Austin isn’t renowned for its public transportation, so the majority of residents have cars.
Locals enjoy year-round green space at Wooldridge Square Park, in Austin, Texas.
Movies and music in the park
While events do happen occasionally in Wooldridge Square Park, Jorgensen says she finds it to be an underutilized space. Past events have included Music in the Park, Movies in the Park, community picnics and recurring games of giant chess.
