Building a better community and visiting others

The northern Austin neighborhood of Wooten takes its name from Dr. Goodall Harrison Wooten, a physician who was actively involved in the civic growth of Austin. His efforts such as the purchase and development of land for the Boy Scouts earned him the title of “Austin’s Most Worthy Citizen.” Today, the doctor’s legacy isn’t just carried in name but also in action, as community service opportunities abound in the neighborhood. Beyond this, the neighborhood is desirable for its proximity to shopping centers and other parts of Austin. “When you want a place that’s easily accessible to the city whether you want to get downtown or go to the Domain shopping center, you can’t beat Wooten’s location and the size and style of homes there,” says Suzanne Valentine, a Realtor with Compass who lived in Wooten for 20 years and has sold homes there for 9 years.

Ranch-style homes and more

Wooten has plenty of living options. “There are homes and rentals and some duplexes and apartments on the neighborhood’s edge, so it’s a pretty mixed-use neighborhood,” Valentine says. Three-to-four-bedroom Ranch-style homes with brick facades are the norm. Roads are spacious enough to accommodate parked cars on either side, and traffic is calm enough that many streets don’t have sidewalks. Most ranch homes were built during the ‘50s and ‘60s and go for between $500,000 and $700,000, but fixer-uppers can go for $450,000 or under. There are also modern builds from the 2020s that follow contemporary styles with inspiration from farmhouses; they can sell for anywhere between $700,000 and $1.5 million.

Shopping plazas and restaurants can be found all along Burnet Road and Research Boulevard, within 2 miles of most homes. Northcross Mall even has a public ice-skating rink. Residents can shop at big-box stores like Walmart and Target or more specialized local stores like Los Vaqueros Supermercado, a supermarket for Latin American goods, and Terra Toys, where residents can get locally made, hand-crafted wooden toys. For dining, Wooten has a variety of culinary options from Cajun to Korean. Ramen Tatsu-ya’s ramen and Japanese dishes don’t just attract Wootenites but residents from across Austin. On top of Mexican dishes like tlacoyos and tortas, locals can get bolillo, tres leches cake and other baked goods at Mi Tradición.

Austin is accessible by car or bus

The northern and eastern sides of Wooten are bookended by US Route 183, and from there, drivers can easily transfer to Interstate 35 or Texas State Highway Loop 1. Via these highways, it’s only a 15-minute drive to Downtown Austin, 8 miles south. Several Capital MetroBus lines pass by Wooten such as 3, 323, 324 and 383. Although the commuter rail cuts through the neighborhood past several subdivisions, there are no stations in Wooten, though there is one a mile south in Crestview. Alternatively, residents can simply Rapid bus line 803 all the way downtown. And thanks to the close proximity of shops and restaurants, the neighborhood is walkable.

Community service events

“It’s My Park Day” is biannual event where community members come together to help beautify Austin Parks, and many Wootenites will weed and mulch the grounds of Wooten Neighborhood Park. The Wooten Neighborhood Association routinely advertises other community service opportunities such as volunteering to deliver pet supplies to seniors or cleaning up school grounds.

Wooten is a great neighborhood. Walkability is good. The neighborhood is gentrifying. With that comes less affordability, but better dining / coffee options etc.

I have never felt threatened or scared in this area before. There is a strong visibility of police in the neighborhood since there have been a few break ins, and they are always patrolling.

The access to gyms isn't great, but the health services are spot on.
